Thumbs down #@$# idiot tow driver

WTF?! i just caught a tow truck driver breaking into my car before he put it on a front wheel lift truck. (neighborhood decides to repave without notice and hand off business to a wrecker company) Thank god i caught him, I was suprised to find his knowledge lacked of how to treat an AWD vehicle. He didn't know that it would **** up an AWD. I tracked down his truck number at the Henry's wrecker here in No. VA, attempted to contact the ever elusive manager who has no voice mail but runs the place. Of course I didn't reach him, then the tow driver was contacted by the guy on the phone and the ****ing idiot said he was "checking" with other drivers about towing AWD........I'm sorry, but if you are a tow driver you must know your profession and know about cars and do's and donts.....His story about "checking with other drivers about AWD" is a long way from the dumb founded look he gave me when I stoped him from towing my vehicle

one more thing, what specific kind of damage can be done to an AWD WRX if towed by a front lift wheel tow? I know that they are SUPPOSED to use a flatbed.

Yup. Bye bye differentials.

Funny thing is, though, is that a Subaru can be towed with all four wheels on the ground (if its a manual, placed in neutral).

But towing on two wheels will kill your center diff and transmission.

Yeah, tow trucks won't usually tow with all four on the ground. That little tidbit of information is usually for people with motorhomes that want to tow their Subarus around with them to where ever they go.

Towing on four wheels is not an option for automatic.

Because of the torque converter in automatic transmissions. In a manual in neutral, the center diff is connected to the wheels but disconnected from the engine.

In an automatic, the torque converter does not mechanically disengage so when the wheels start moving, the gears inside trying to move one way and the engine (by virtue of not being on) is doing its best to prevent the gears from spinning at all.

How is it that some FWD cars can be towed 4 wheels down? Wouldn't all automatics suffer the same fate? My grandpa used to tow his Honda Odysey behind his bus with 4 on the ground.

It really depends on the auto tranny. Most Honda auto FWD cars can be towed with all four wheels on the ground (some aparently need a special 'towing' procedure before and after towing)

On the right hand side, there are links to check which kind of cars can be towed behind a motorhome (on all 4 wheels) from years 2001 to 2004.
