When will the '05 model year be out?
I am in a dificult situation. I cannot purchase a new car until April 3rd of 2004. I was wondering whe th 05 model of the Sti is coming out. And would it be worth it to wait?
I think that is your best route, if you can wait. It's way too early to speculate what changes there will be, but judging by some of the problems people are having and/or complaints they seem to be ones that will be addressed.

agreed, you should wait, the 05 Stis will definitely be a bit better than the 04, bug and glitch wise. i have to wait too so ill be getting an 05 subaru =) your not the only one buddy, we will wait together and eventually we will both be happy when we both get 05's, cause the 04's are gona be jealous of us
or maybe not.

There will be 2005 STi, I don't even have doubts about that...
But by then most of u might start falling in love with new legacy GT B spec..
I am waiting for '05 impatiently.. The most important reasons are:
1) Get the car UNDER MSRP, probably $500-$1000 over invoice
2) 1st year production bugs fixed
3) Wait for tuners to show us what they can offer for this car and the reliability/streetability of it..
4) Save up a little more money
5) slight possibility of more options, etc (I doubt we will see anything major, if anything before 06 model year though)..

1) It's been done, you just have to look hard and do your homework. I've negotiated with two dealers prices below invoice. One was just last week for $1K below and the other was for $400 above invoice. I'll be picking up my car on Saturday from the latter.
No to mention there are already '04 STi's on the used market with extremely low miles (2K and less) that with a little talking can be had for less than MSRP and are already 'broken in'. These cars are still new and are only 60-90 days young.
2) Any bugs will be covered by the SoA warranty. I'm convinced the ping/det thing that has been going around is due to use of low octane, crappy (CA) and/or ethanol gas, possibly a few badly programmed ECU's from the first release that require a relfash, and a general hysteria. Folks almost seem to want there car to have a problem so they can have something to say and/or talk about.
3) This car is already tuned...its been tuned by STi.
Its a factory tuned & upfitted WRX. Folks have spent all kinds of money on their regular WRX's prior to achieve lesser gains to the STi and all without a warranty or financing. Here you have a factory WRX with all the goodies plus some (DCCD, diffs, gauge pack by Deif, etc.) and you get a factory supported warranty and can finance the whole package over 60 mohts if you like. Thats something you could never do prior with add-on bric-a-brack from the likes of a 'We 'R Tuners.com' supplier. Oh, and the factory/STi tuning is proven to work and provide real usable gains. To some degree witht he tuner stuff you have to take their marketing claims by their word or spend more money & time (which is money) toward dynoing your car to tune it and be sure your mods (which you have already paid for and are non-returnable!) are now actuall doing any good.
It seems folks have lost sight of the big picture here. This car is no slouch, has all the goodies and more that most folks would have spent to put on/in their WRX if they had been available seperately, and it comes "tuned" and dynoed. This thing rocks box stock. Yeah it can be made to go even faster/quicker but its already at the bleeding edge as performance goes.
But then again this all coming from the same guy who had the audacity & nerve to vocally compare the STi to the G35C 6MT, and liked the G...alot.
4) No comment on saving up cash other than that timing is everything.
5) What more options does one need?
A radio? Folks who have recieved their car with the radio complain that its crap and are removing and selling them outright to install their own ICE.
What cracks me up most about this are people complain that the factory setup is terrible for the roughly $1K cost (it sounds fine to me, for a car) so they remove it and then spend $3-4K on new stuff just to listen to the radio and or play a CD during an hours commute. Now don't get me wrong as I'm not hating on folks who spend that kind of money on a car stereo, to each their own. But, what gets me is folks say the SOA pacakge costs too much but then they go and spend 2-4 times as much afterward (?). Me, I'll be going with just a regular old radio w/in dash CD player.
Then there are the complaints about no sunroof. Sunroofs reduce headroom further limitng the type of buyer for this niche car. The attendant hardwar increases weight overall reducing performance (fuel economy as well as 0-60 & 1/4 mile times) and it raises the Cg of the car which some have already referred to as "tippy".
As for other options like a FMIC, that would be ok if it didn't mean a loss of low ened turbo response. An option to have or not have the wing would be something I'd like but that too can be easily & cheaply solved with a trip to your local auto dismantler and purchasing a '03 WRX trunk lid (with or without the regular WRX wing).
AMD, I'm not trying to start anything or be a smart a$$ by responding in kind to your items as I just felt like expressing my thoughts toward your points. For those that did or will spend big money on ICE, thats cool too. I personally prefer to spend that money on my home entertainment system where I'd enjoy it more often w/friends & family and its less likely to be stolen or damaged.
As for a '05 STi, it hasn't been announced by SOA yet that this car will go forward. Sales will dictate that as well as scheduling for release of a new Impreza chassis.

Janq, I will put money down there gonna be '05 STi...
and for #
2) I am sure Subaru does some UNANNOUNCED fixes that NOBODY will know about and u wont get with 2004 Model year cars.
They might announce public ECu refresh, might not, they may simply make a few adjustments in ECU and not tell anyone abou it, simply to avoid being blamed, etc.. Dealers might get a note to quietly reflash ECUs if any STi comes in for miantenance, fixes, etc..
