I have been reading and talking to people aout the EVO's that were handed out to the press. Some of the testers have said that they may be tweeked for higher output than the stock Evo's. The ECU mappings may have been tweeked for 22.8 PSI boost. and over 318 HP. The STI's that have been tested are bone stock and unbroken in.
Now if any one have inside information of this please confirm it. It could be like the Mustang Horse power Game that Ford played.

Fords action was the reverse in that they sold vehicles which made _less_ power than marketed. Buyers thought they were getting 'X' when in fact they were getting 'X' - 10 to 25 HP & Torque.

Now if someone purported to get a 13.6 run out of a stock WRX that would be a mystery. (ie - BS)
Honestly, no offense, but I think sometimes people are innumerate, and can't grasp the degree of difference.
13.08 on an Evo is simply a more powerful car that most Evo's which are running mid-high 13's.....and don't fool yourself either....there are many Evo owners who can't even crack 14, just like Autoweek couldn't......they just don't brag about it.

I'll second that. How refreshing!
The guy actually says something. It seems like R&T, C&D and MT are more busy coming up with pithy phrases or taking bribes from auto manufacturers (just kidding...)
I like this guy's review style.

I thought the USA Today reviews were great for the Evo and STi. The articles seemed objective and consistent. Once again, though, the Evo performance numbers are surprising.
Heck, I don't know what to believe abou the Evo and STi times anymore. For the Evo, I've seen forum threads, magazine articles, and video claiming 0-60 times from 4.59 to 5.1 (Evo) and quarter-mile times from 13.185 to 14.1. For the STi, I've seen/read/heard 0-60s from 4.4 - 5.0 and quarter miles from 13.2 to 13.9. The numbers are all over the friggin' place.
I'll be glad when we can start getting some stock STi and Evo drag strip runs from real owners so we can have some more realistic numbers from everyday guys like you and me.

thats wrong!
dude...don't listen to them...read the car magazines...i saw 13.08 for the evo in motortrend and 13.3ish for the sti. not to mention 4.3 for the evo to 60 and 4.8 for the sti....i don't know what they are smoking....USA Today are the ones that probably can't launch all-wheel drive and just get it rolling then floor it....don't listen to that bull****! no way in hell they are that slow...WRX run 13.9's according to car and driver and i have heard people have gotten stock w's to run 13.4 at the track....cold weather does wonders!

Re: thats wrong!
Hahaha.
Believe what you want, but I suggest re-reading the Motortrend article. You might find some interesting qualifiers applied to those numbers.
Also, don't you find it curious that a car with significantly less torque (Evo) out accelerates another car (STi) that is the exact same weight?
I think magazine articles are quite useful to some extent, but guys, look at all the articles critically. Testing conditions are important. Also, manufacturers have been known to give the car mags ringers. The car mags actually joke about it sometimes.

ohh i know...the conditions were totally different for the evo vs the sti...but i wasn't comparing the cars...i was just comparing the articles....i agree with 100%...motortrend even said the conditions were worse for the sti....but they also said that the acceleration tests should be pretty close cause they are both all-wheel drive so the track conditions shouldn't affect that very much...only thing would be air temp. and also how broken in the cars are...but i agree with you...i am just trying to prove that USA Today is crazy!
what do numbers prove anyway? it's just a measurement, it all comes down to where you want to go. mitsubishi or subaru. these cars are so close in comparison that it really doesn't matter which you choose. i however think that since the STi is a 2.5 liter engine and quite new to the market, i think that the parts will be somewhat limited for the time being. also for the fact that in japan they still utilize the 2.0L motor. in terms of the evolution, this motor has been around for quite some time and there are may proven parts on the market from internals to turbos to bodykits. it's pretty much exactly the same as the JDM spec one, given that it doesn't come with the 6-speed, and AYC/ACD. but the 5-speed, which was on the evolution VII is very proven and pretty much bulletproof. i actually read somewhere that it's actually a bit stronger than the evolution VII's transmission, and this one's been in japan and europe and proven for it's ability. so pick and choose. also, in terms of everything else, chassis, engine profile, turbo, etc. it's the same in japan. i think there's a lot of hidden horsepower within the ECU, it'll just take some tuning and you're going to kick some a$$.

I suggest that we can't say much about either car for another few months after they are broken in, thrashed and modded. I bet there will be problems with both.
The Evo also has a potentially serious issue in 91 octane states. The manual says the car requires 93 octane and 87 or 91 should only be used for a short time as a stopgap until you can get 93 in. It might be a translation gaffe, but some Evo owners are complaining about anemic performance on 91 octane.
But in the end, these are two great cars and the rivalry should be great for everyone. Can't wait until they get everything sorted out.
you know what my friend, i couldn't agree more. you know what i think though, i think there are many people that buy these cars that just don't know how to drive. i mean, there are some people here that are pushing close to 350 whp and still on the stock transmission, and there are those that are breaking theirs still on stock if not, a stage 1 at the most. i guess i believe this because my friend, who has been driving manual for many years now, still can't drive for nothing. i mean popping out the clutch, riding the clutch, it's horrendous to ride with him. i think if he had our cars, he would definitely be one of those to break something. i guess it also depends on the drivers. everybody's different. but don't get me wrong, i totally agree with you and we just have to see what happens when everything gets straightened out. i guess to clarify my statement, when i say bulletproof, i mean to those that can drive.
