True EJ25?

I was wonder if the STI engine is a true EJ25 or an enlarged EJ20 or a new breed altogether. Im still kinda a noob so bare with me.

Car Info: 02' WRX

The block is similar to an EJ25 in displacement, but after that all similarities end. Just think of it as a whole new engine.
