STi vs other cars.
i was wondering what you all thought in terms of how the STi would fare against others in similarly priced categories.
Here's my take,
Nissan 350 Z, prob one of the best performance package for the price. You get 5.4 sec, 0-60 for $27,000, rwd performance and great handling and looks. I was actually looking into getting this car but there is hardly no trunk space and tuneability on the 3.5 liter engine will be very costly.
RX8, great car but for what price?? 1.3 liter rotary engine will give you the thrill of experiencing one of the highest revving production vehicles...close to 9,000 rpm redline i believe. given what we know about the rx7's, this car will most likely be very light and outhandle many cars above its price range.
Then we have the Evo VIII. Much to my disappointment mitsu focused on product boost and sales and undermined the value of the car grossly compared to that of the true jdm spec version. Everthing about the evo is known for its suspension set up and now without the ACD feature who knows how it will do in terms of the review. Mitsu of America is claiming .96 on the skidpad but that's yet to be tested by other reputable car mags (car and driver and SCC) so we'll have to wait and see. 60/40 weight ratio seems too unbalanced as well. as of spiking up the hp on this car it shouldn't be a problem. the 4g63 has always been known for one the best tuning platforms.
Then we the mustang cobra which in my opinion is prob one of the best cars to get for straightline drag racing. for as little as $1,000 to 2,000 you can make that car go crazy fast but interior quality is somewhat lacking and highend power is as good as transferring that power onto the ground which the cobra would have a hard time doing with a rwd set up.
Lastly, the STi. Price hasn't been announced yet but i'm hoping it should be around the 31k-32k at most. it'll prob have one of the best handling for its money coming with dccd and hopefully a better overall weight distribution then the evo or the 350Z. i'm hoping its overall curbweight will be under 3200pds as well. this will perhaps be one of the most coveted cars for 2003 with all the features that it comes with. its a tuner's wet dream with the starting platform of 2.5 liter semi-close engine deck and forged internals. This car will be beast and has the handling to go with it. my only gripe (and yeah you can bicker all you want about me not being a true enthusiast), is no sunroof cause i love that feature on all my past rides. but other than that i love everything about it. The fact that SOA actually listened and responded to the consumer is great. only thing left is to make the pricing competitive so they'll get the most customers for the STi. hopefully, they will price it favorably given the other choices that the consumer has.
Any thoughts??? Any other cars i'm missing out on?

The RX-8 will come in at 27k with a torsen LSD and a 3011 lbs curb weight. This car might be better than expected.

I agree with your list of cars. At ford's first event where they had a competition between the new 2003 cobras, one ran in the 9's with usual exhaust, supercharger pulley and other small mods and nitrous. Seems that most lightly modded were in the 10s and 11s in the quarter mile. The cobra is definitely a great bang for your buck street car. Now if we could all just afford the insurance.

At ford's first event where they had a competition between the new 2003 cobras, one ran in the 9's with usual exhaust, supercharger pulley and other small mods and nitrous. you can't beat that.
even w/ a 50/50 dstri cuz w/ a FM it's so easy to balance them
Nissan could do a 5050 but they choose to "preload" the front a lil
as you accelerate after apex you will achieve a perfect 50 50 shooting out a corner. "preloading part from Nissan's website"
Evo is more balanced than JDM due to the added weight.
EVo 7 was 61/39 but lighter.
STi will prolly have the best suspension as they are completely redesigned from ground up.

I suppose these cars would be on the list of most ENTHUSIASTS shopping with around $25-$35 large--of course in order of MY personal preference
1) Sti- sophisticated technology and performance in a good chassis and OK looks
2) Evo - a decontented version of the last statement
3) bare bones 2005 235hp, 6speed or SMT 330i w sports pkg (admittedly the most pricey of bunch)
4) RX-8..certainly given very low center of gravity even wrt old RX-7 it should be the best handling of the bunch
5) Z or for increased practicality G35 coupe
6) SVT Cobra..although i hate the cheap sounding supercharger
7) S2000

you guys are nuts. i dont care what handling technologies the evo doesnt come with. if you are an experienced driver you dont even want AYC on your car, thats why rs versions dont come with it and all pros dont use it. i admit not having the ACD is a loss. but this is still the evolution were talking about. its got the same suspension, chassis, and awd as any other version. it will def be one of the top 2-3 handling in this comparison anytime.

"handling" ---now there is a word that can mean different things to different people...are you talking handling as in an F1 cars ability to take medium radius corners at unreal high speeds, are you talking of outright skid pad grip, are you talking about slalom performance or a combination of all these attributes keeping in mind it is difficult to maximize all of them at the same time?...personally its a more nebulous combination--a miata i think handles wonderfully although it has not got "leading' numbers but the sense that one gets of being one with the car, the feedback etc is pure bliss...in that sense i think the Sti will top the Evo...and yes, u r right the Evo will be near the top of the list--but just not at the top...that is reserved for the Sti!

im a mazda lover for life but im scared that the rx8 will be a disappointment for those expecting a new rx7. Doesnt seem like there is a whole lot of torque for 30k....
i think the STI blows away all competition and would snag one if i could afford one.....ill have to settle for my mazdaspeed protege instead.

I drove a Z. I wasnt that trilled. My L handles better, and the torque on the Z is nice but it seemed underwhelming surprizingly. And with 2 seats and no trunk space due to the strut bar, I think the G35 would be the better option (and its aparently selling better too, there are like 15 z's on the local Nissan dealers lot, and they keep calling me since the test drive trying to sell me one 
)
The RX-8 sounds more exiting to me, mostly due to the weight distribution, rotary technology, and much lower price. Its very hard to get a Z for under $30k despite the base price... The RX-8 will peak out at $30k fully loaded.
The EVO sounds nice, but its a Mitsu... Reliability is a concern, and that cars interior is aweful chintzy compaired to even an Impreza. Then theres the Alteza light problem combined with the Cavalier looking bumper... Ug.
There are still cars like the IS300, 330, and even the Golf R32 coming out that might be considered competitors as well, but seem to fit the less performance orientated croud better.
But, in the end, the STI seems to have all the cool tech, power, and practicality in order... Along with improved looks and BLUE SEATS AND CARPETS!!!

1.) Sti - Not because we're in a Subaru Impreza website, but because I like the agressive looks, rally heritage, driver knick knacks like the DCCD and good power from the power plant. The newly added 2.5l turbo powerplant make this car sort of a milestone in Sti history. I'm betting that every european and Aussie will be asking for this version instead of the 2.0l.
2.) RX-8 - It looks sorta "finessy", but knowing Mazdas heritage of great handling and great engineering in their cars, this would be nice to have. Next gen rotary is a must see.
3.) Next gen Z. Styling? What Styling? It looks like they slammed a bunch of panels together, rounded out the edges and called it a style. The front is ok but the rear to me is hideous. Track version is the only one i'll get if I get one. Has nice tech knick-knacks such as the diff job, 6sp, Brembos, and Volk rims which are nice. Oh, don't forget the sweet NA 3.5l V6 pumping out 280hp. Nissan if anything was always known for their sweet engines. RB26DETT(you guys know where this one came from), VG30DETT(300ZX), SR20DET (silvia), are almost legendary in their field.
4.) My dad's 240Z. Why this one? Its a classic, smog exempt, and very cool. The bargain sports car of it's day. ~$5000 in 1971, but with the inflation and import taxes setting in, it would probably be ~30,000 now a days new.. They were selling refurbished 240Zs in Cali for $35,000 at the nearby Nissan Dealer in Walnut Creek!!! You get used to the gas fumes sucked in to the rear by the swirling winds at the rear end of the car after a while. One more thing.. SU CARBS SUCK!!!
5.) EVO - Slightly detuned (no trac control and yaw control) but still rally inspired which is nice. Great AWD system, good 4cyl turbo engine. Very reasonably priced at a rumored 29,000$ MSRP. Styling is sorta... Blech to me.. Mitsubishi quality has gone down and there has been a big hit against Mitsu in Japan for alleged scandals hiding defects in their autos. There was a police raid on one of their offices in Japan and everything. I love AWD cars and the rally heritage, but this is why I'm not a big fan of the EVO. So the EVO gets the SLAM..
