Sti vs Evo Spec Details

944TG, I'm not here to argue or say you are wrong, but your statement isn't exactly true. The UTQG rating # is a masure of how well the tread wears. The higher the number the longer the tire lasts. This does not necissarily equate to how "sticky" a tire is or how well it performs. What makes this funny is that I was just at the Subaru Dealer last night and happened to look at a set of tires on a WRX in the show room. The Bridgestone RE092's that come stock on a WRX have a tread wear rating of 160. (Printed on the tire and verified on tirerack.) Based on what you said above then the RE092 should be a great tire, but its not. To further explain my point, my honda sits on a set of Kuhmo ECSTA 712's. They are rated at a tread wear of 280. They replaced a set of sumitomo HTR Z II which had a trear wear rating of 220. The truth is that the Kuhmo's out perform the Sumitomos (barely though) and both of these, with higher tread wear numbers, out perform the RE092 in everything but snow.
NOW, I'm not saying that the RE070 isn't a killer tire. The fact is that it is a very very good and sticky tire, but the UTQG number is tread wear, not stickyness so it isn't as easy as looking at the number to determine the performance. I waited a long time and did a lot of reading before I bought my Kuhmo's because I felt the number would = performance. Now I know first hand. Tire rack has a good explaination of the ratings.
PS, does anybody know where you can actually read up on the RE070 specs? Everytime I do a search I come up links to the NSX-R (nice company to be in
) or to the STI.
Rally on!

i thnk you are right about the treadwear rating in general but it makes sense that high grip tires will generally be softer and wear faster....also the tires on the WRX are RE92 and not RE092..a world of difference is implied in that missing zero
ALL Bridgestone RE0XX tires are high grip tires designed for high performance cars--including the NSX you mentioned and also the great Ferrari Enzo, Z3, some AMG sedans, etc...not saying that we are getting Enzo grade tires but we are surely getting some of teh best technology Bridgestone has to offer...I would be amazed if Yokohama's best will be a match for our RE070

You're right about me adding the extra 0, but the RE92 is still a 160 treadwear rated tire. It is true that a higher performance tire is usually softer, but the treadwear # does not = softness or stickness. That was my real point. I do think the 070 will kick some serious butt. I'm just hoping they last more than 10k miles on the highway, or more importantly one full season of autocrossing.

Tread wear
Rally Keith I am not making mention of tread wear rating in terms of how long the tire last, I am making mention of the rating that race tire engineers use when comparing compound, grip and how long it takes a race tire to heat up. There are only a hand full of guys at Tire Rack that really know race tires, and most of them are'nt on the phone. Before I tested an M3 for Speed World challenge my buddy said,." be careful those ToYo 's are a 280 tread rating,..NOT UTQG, but the same rating scale I explained in my initial post,.I ,.and most racers could care less about UTQG, and so I didnt make myself clear earlier. The spec tires used in Speedvision are like driving on ice compared to the Hoosiers they used to run on, difference? tread rating is a 0(zero) vs a 280 for the TOYO. If this doesnt make since to you, talk someone who sells and services race tires, they'll give you a earfull and really confuse you because everything you think of with "street tires" goes out the window when taking about race tires,..let me be clear,...D.O.T. race tires.( hoosier, comp ta-R1, Yokohama 032r)
Tire Rack doesnt service race tires, they sell them,..next time you;re at a ALMS race or Grand-Am race go talk to the race tire engineers,.and then you'll understand where I was coming from.
Sorry for the confusion......

I thinks that Bridgestone tires are good thats why alot of racing cars use it , but also Yokohama are very good , I don't know if they are better or not but both are excellent tires (potenzas and ADVAN) what I hate is people talking whithout learn more about the technologies or compounds that they use , I see in this forum in particular that only because they own a WRX , they car, parts ,tires ect are the best of the best and don't care about any other car , and even some people say that there car is going to be better that the EVO, wake up until you don't have a real STI (no all those wannabes that put like 10 STI emblem and them think there car just tranform like magic in a racing machine) don't no compare cars because you always going to lose

Wheeh. I was hoping I missed something there. I still can't seem to find any real info on the 070s though. If they wear as fast as I've heard (something like 5-10k miles on an NSX-R) I may have to consider that second set of street tires a lot faster.

now re your dig on the STi--both are great cars and no doubt there is a probability (somewhere between 0 and 0.000001%) that when the road tests are done the Evo will outperform the STi
