If it is the stereo then it was probably more for cost cutting than weight savings. The Japanese Stis usually come with crazy stuff like the top of the line Kenwood systems. Of course, this doesn't mean that we won't get the same type of top notch system either. But, I'd suspect a SOLID system can easily add $1000 to the price of the car.

Also, take a look at the Japanese Sti interior. It seems like the stereo is not the conventional 7"x2" face.

For those who can't read Japanese, just click the
4th option from the top on the left side menu bar.

I would guess a fair number of people replace the stock stereos anyways so this just lets us have the stereo we want from the get go. With a stereo the cost would have gone up for the sticker price as well. Who knows. I just want the damn thing...

I stumbled upon that a few days ago....interesting. Here is another interior shot, but without a radio. Sorta looks like a 1.5 or 2 DIN opening. If that is the case, i'd opt for a single DIN head unit and use the extra space for my HKS EVC IV. http://www.subaru.co.jp/impreza/sedan/08/index.html
Only time will tell...
