Sti Ping/det??????????
Please post if you have PING or DET problems. What type of gas and octane are you useing?how much milage do you have what rpm do you hear it at and what are your weather conditions. If you have any of these problems bring it to the dealer.please post you feedback from dealer.
hey
i have read about this on the nazioc, and have heard from a local tuner about the pinging issue. i also heard something about a local dealer claiming the STi REQUIRES (per Subaru) 93 octane. I have a hard time believing that, so much of this is still rumor, and not EVERY STi owner is complaining. but that is more likley due to 90% of us not knowing what detonation sounds like (even the self proclaimes "experts"), and detonation not always being obvious.
none the less, from what I heard from the tuner, is the pinging was audible from outside the garage, and sounded like a hammer banging on the motor. normally you'd think the ECU would pull timing, but it does not apparently. dyno run after dyno run the ECU never pulled timing. soooo, i imagine a not-mandatory reflash of the ECU will happen here if this persists, and there are enough problems.
this shouldn't be too alarming. this is a new motor (although most of the parts are not) and you are bound to have teething problems when presented to the public. many tuners are already seeing insane improvements with simple bolt ons, and in a couple cases the detonation gets much better with a bigger turbo, and free flowing exhaust. Also, in a few months the tuners will figure out what the best reflashes will be for mods. i have read about 310 or so whp with bolt ons. that is SERIOUS power.
anyway, this should not freak anyone out. If it is indeed and issue, Subaru will fix it. lets just not freak out until we get all the facts and more STi'a re on the road.

Mine pings on Sunoco Ultra 94
Temps are around 76 degrees
Humidity around 50%
The ping is easily reproducible between 3-4K in any gear on a load. After 4K the ping stops and the car keeps pulling till redline. This is a very dissappointing issue with this car. I am going to switch gas to see if it makes any difference and possibly try some race gas. I will be notifying my dealer about the problem in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, I will be trying to remedy this problem with race gas and resetting the ECU. It will suck if this car can't run pump gas!
I was so close to getting the EVO too...

If that's all it is then it's fine with me.
hey
if it is very faint, but does it under load, than it is not the cams. the cams make noise at idle, not when accelorating. i suggest you have your car looked at.

knock
I have 1300 miles on my STi and had no issues with knock until yesterday in 80 degree weather. Hard driving on the highway, was at a stoplight for a bit, full throttle in 2nd gear heard a tick-tick-tick (fairly rapid tick that increased as rpm increased) between 3-4k rpms. I'm pretty sure the sound I heard was detonation.. someone tell me if i'm wrong. Pretty disappointing.. I did the proper break in, and had no signs of ping until yesterday. I run 93 octane. Now what? Talked to the dealer, but they can't do anything at this point.

Got this from Subaru today:
Thank you for your recent message to Subaru of America, Inc. We appreciate
your comments and feedback. We would not know why you may be encountering
knock or ping noise concerns with your 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX Sti. We rely
on the expertise of the factory trained technicians at authorized Subaru
dealerships to inspect, diagnose, and repair our vehicles. Therefore we
would have to refer you to a dealer for your concern. If you do go to an
authorized Subaru dealer and would like us to follow up while your vehicle
is there, please let us know the name of servicing Subaru dealership and
date of the appointment.
Please also refer to page 7-14 of your Owner's Manual: "The engine may, on
rare ocasions, knock when the vehicle rapidly accelerates or rapidly pulls
away from a standstill. This phenomenon is not an indication of a problem in
your vehicle."
We have documented your concern in our customer service system. We use such
data from customers to log and track dealer and product performance. Please
contact our Customer/Dealer Services Center either by email or telephone
(1-800-SUBARU3) and refer to case number 508581, if you have further
questions. Thank you again for allowing us the opportunity to address this
matter.
I took the car to the dealer... they don't know anything about the car yet, so there's nothing they can do about it at this point. The best thing we can do right now is let Subaru know about the problem. They apparently document email that are sent to them, so I'm urging everybody that has an STi that is knocking to email them through their website:
http://www.subaru.com/contact/contact/middle.jsp
The more documentated cases, the more likely they'll take action.

Pissed off...
Well mine pings as well... i just finished my meticulous break-in period... Seems I was rewarded today by hearing my car ping around 4500 RPM accelerating under load.
I run Amoco 93 octane fuel. It is the best around and I have never had a problem with it.
Any suggestions?
I guess I'll just keep my car in the garage foever.
