Can anyone please explain why and when the ecu switches to these maps?

I don't know the exact data that the ECU needs to see to switch between the hi and lo-det maps but the trigger is obviously detonation/knock sensor readings.

The ECU starts out with it's fuel trimmed conservatively (the high-det map) and slowly adds positive knock correction to timing and will eventually drop out of the over-rich (up to and maybe more than -.5:1 afr!) hi-det map and switches to the low-det map.

You can't really see this without getting into the ROM file, or by monitoring fuel trims/positive knock correction with Delta Dash.

This is something that the Ecutek software guys are looking at closely as we speak. It's kind of a "guarded" item. It's the ace in the hole of the Ecutek tuner and since we can't see the rules in the ECU ROM file without it I guess there's no reason to release the nitty gritty to the unwashed masses.

I'm sure we'll get to hear more about it in time. As for now, it's important to get the "Vishnu Reset" down - and minimize knock before tuning AFR (with a piggyback) or you're going to be inconsistent.

Thumbs up

IS2Scooby,

Thanks for the info.

I assume that my EcuTek will still switch maps?

I have been told by some folks that have access to the Ecutek software that the easiest way to combat the "inconsistency" of the WRX programming is to just change the values in BOTH maps to read the same. Sounds like a smart way to go to me. (Unless of course there is a day that you forget to put the right fuel in your car in 90 degree heat with 4 people riding along for a burnout - then boom!)
