As I predicted C&D released their STi numbers today!

In a head to head STi vs. EVO comparison the EVO took first place with 92 points to the STi's 88.
It was close but the bottom line is EVO won the battle by my favorite auto mag. Hats off to Mitsubishi!!!
For me though, I don't mind a close second in track times.
The 0-60 and top gear acceleration as well skidpad numbers are most important in my life. The STi rips!
The numbers posted by a user quoting Motro trend seem to be reversed as compared to C&D. If the numbers are correct then they must have been testing Silencers EVO or one close to it that has been touched by the hand of God himself.
Speed rules, absolutely.

Thanks for posting this stuff janq...this is exactly the comparo info I've been waiting for to try to help decide between the two. Looking at the numbers, it's hard to see how the Evo comes out ahead...but I have to go read the articles now. Thanks for the post.

Normal (relative term) AWD performnace vehciles run with open front and/or rear diffs which handle power less aggressively.
Bottom line, the STi is setup for powering into corners _hot_, then jump on the brakes and throw the rear into a slide/drift, turn the wteering whell and point it toward your exit then get off the brake and punch it. You'll sligshot out of the corner like cannon shot. Think of 'Outlaw' dirt track car cornering style and your close to what I'm saying.
Shirokuma aka 'Paul Hansen' made a very detailed post at NASIOC last week on this subject base don testing a JDM STi 8.
We're all going to have to relearn how to drive in corners with this one as she's not like an Audi Quattro or Porsche AWD setup nor like the regular WRX.

It's different
Based on a few days and only around 100+ miles of road driving I have to agree. It handles totally different then a WRX. I was very confortable with my WRX Wagon (with full STi suspension), but it's going to take a lot of drive time to get used to and comfortable with the STi.
Looking forward to taking it out to AutoX at the end of May. Talk about timing. We have a Test & Tune day then...

There are tons of applicable information on driving trucks off road that have manual, air and or electronic locking front diffs are raced in various off-road events.
They report similar steering & cornering pecuiarities/techniques similar to what Shirokuma posted at NASIOC.
In fact when I heard about the STI and its diff setup I immediately though of this occuring. Later today when I'm less busy (I'm at work) I'll research for you guys a few links regarding this concpet as applied to off-road racing trucks (Rangie' Defenders, Jeeps and Uni-Mog's) as well as the original post by Shirokuma.
A modification of driving style will be required to take full advantage of the locking front diff. in and out of corners.

Well, it's time I chimed in. As expected ferocious debates have and will continue to ensue between the EVO and the STi. As for the results; I'm somewhat surprised the EVO is as matched up and in some cases better than the STi. But that doesn't matter... as for my decision on what to get is still an easy one; STi by default, firstly, because the EVO is not offered in Canada anyway because it's intercooler placement is an issue with some law of some kind.
Anyhow, even if the EVO was available here I'd still choose the Sti. So what if the EVO edges out the Sti in extreme handling and breaking? And what about STi understeer; is it going to understeer anymore than the car you are driving now? I doubt it. Who of us that frequents these boards is going to REALLY notice these things? How many of us are even capable of driving these machines to their limits in the first place? And even if you can... how often will you? When it comes down to it for me the points are moot. Whatever way you look at it, both are excellent driving machines for a good price. But I choose the Sti for a "softer" daily ride, that doesn't knock out my filings while I go to work in the morning, better fit and finish, and more user amenities. Also, it's got better acceleration, faster top end (not that I'll see it) and they say it handles the rough stuff and gravel better than the EVO. Come and drive in downtown Toronto or my cottage roads and you'll wish you were in a big, fat, rolling Grand Marquis.
I vote STi and I couldn't care less what ANY reviewer says because one thing is for sure. I test drove a WRX twice and was ecstatic. If the STi is better than that I will be a very, very happy camper.
