Problems with 2.5 '04 STI enegine ??
Ive hard from 3 different sources now that the new US STI motors are actually being built by a 3rd part vendor and that they are not as strong as the standard 2.0 STI engines
Then I heard of serious failures and problems in testing and development
Has anyone elese heard any thing about this ??
(I'm still getting my STI but just want to find out what the "real" deal is about this new engine )

I remember reading something about increasing the displacement of a flat-4 engine on a Japanese magazine. The article wasn't about the new 2.5 liter turbo engine. It was a comparison on different stroker kit (Toda, JUN, Tommy Kaira…) for the EJ20 engine. They were saying that the best displacement for this type of engine should be about 2.1 liter, and anything higher than 2.2 liter kit makes the engine unreliable.

There is some benefit to that approach
Also - I'd like to make it have 400 wheel hp on street gas and make it super fast
Maybe I'll keep it stock the first year and then go crazy on the mods later ??
Maybe I'll buy two of them - keep one stock for daily drivinga nd make the other a track car ??
Hello,
Uhh, Alfried, what are you smoking? Lets just say that you were the head of a company that was developing a new engine. What would you do, in that position? Would you tread lightly or would you do whatever you could to blow up the engine to really learn where those limits were? Would you run the engine at 7k rpm for 30 minutes? 2 hours? 24 hours? How would you decide when the engine is ready for the real world?
I would be shocked if Subaru did NOT blow up any motors along the way of developing a new motor. And I would be shocked if the 2.5 was based on a 2.0 instead of on a 2.5. To bore and stroke the smaller engine would be silly. To strengthen the bigger engine would cost significantly less.

I'm with joel on that one... I'm sure subaru wouldn't release the car if it had serious engine problems. They would lose too much money on warranty claims.

Coughcoughtransmissioncoughcough. But yeah. I just meant that Alfried said:

PS, BTW, who goes by Esq. these days? I find it sounds so archaic/lame that I feel funny when someone calls me esquire or puts an Esq. on my name. Plus, Joel Gat, Esq. just kills the fact that I have a seven letter name

Joel - I don't know HOW Alex gave you the title "Dork" under your name - but somehow it just "fits" real fine
PS - I've been running my 2.0 L at 3 times the stock HP level and up to 30 psi on boost with a 50 shot - and so far I have not blown up any engines to date

Okay, cool. So what? How does that prove that Subaru should not have tested their new engine thoroughly?

Hello,
I feel like I'm not making sense to y'all.
Alfried said 'oh my goodness, can you believe that subaru blew up some of their 2.5 motors while they were developing them.'
And I responded 'no duh! of course they did.'
Alfried was implying that there is something bad about the fact that Subaru tested and abused their motors during the development process.
I am saying that there is nothing bad about them testing the motors. In fact, given the number of people who have blown their transmissions, I think there's a lot of good reason for subaru to thoroghly test their new engine.
So Alfried's attempt to raise an alarm is really just dumb.
Why I need to explain this conversation is beyond me. Perhaps I am just too confusing when I type.
