Perhaps it isn't det?!?
My STi also makes a "det/ping" sound when I accelerate hard, but I have a theory as to what we are really hearing. Could it possibly be the limited slip front diff engaging or the DCCD slipping to allow torque transfer? I understand some of us are familiar with real det/ping, but why would so many of us with STi's have this problem, even when running 93+ octane gas? I notice that I only hear the "ping" when the tires begin to slip, if I accelerate smoothly but forcefully, then no noise. Just a thought, let me know what you guys think (especially the STi gearheads and those very familiar with limited slip front diffs and DCCD's.)

go to nasioc.com and to their forums. . . this subject has been covered pretty well. Perhaps you're right, I definitely like your opinion over the "dentination" syndrom. I would imagine subaru wouldn't have a car on the street that was glutton for doom. =\

Syndicate STi, I have checked out the nasioc site, and even posted the same thread over there (I am known as wrxrallymt at nasioc). I just bought Unocal 76 110 octane race gas today, and I am going to run it in the STi and see what happens
If it still makes noise, then I will not be convinced that it is det. Anyways, I contacted my local dealer, and they are talking to SOA. I have the first STi in northwestern Montana (maybe all of MT so far, if not let me know!) and they are interested in taking care of me and my ride. They better, I have bought 2 cars from them!

Check out vishutuning. When they dyno'ed the STI they detected audible detonation as described. (they were using proper knock detection equipment too)
