New STi Too Expensive?
According to Automobile magazine, the new WRX STi
will cost $35,000. That is a LOT of money for a Subaru!
I mean, for 35K, you could buy: Honda S2000 sports car,
BMW three-series or Z4, Acura, Lexus, or Infiniti sports sedan,
Mercedes C class, Volvo, Saab, or a used Porsche Boxster
or a used Ferrari.
The current WRX has a list price of $24,720-- meaning
the "new" WRX will cost TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE
than the current model, and $5,000 more than its competitor,
the $29,000, 275 hp, AWD Mitsubishi Evo.
What do the rest of you think?
(Personally, I'm planning on buying a three year old,
current model WRX!).

More On That Price
Oh, not to forget: Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8-- both under
$35,000... or for that matter, buy this year's WRX, and put
ten thousand dollars of mods into it!!!
I mean, the WRX is a way-cool car, but part of its "coolness"
is the affordable (relatively speaking) price.
How can Subaru justify big bucks, for what is, basically,
a hot-rodded Impreza?

JDM EVO VS STi best motoring
from EvoM forum...
by IS 200:
"
First, the video introduced a new JDM EVO8 and compared it against the EVO7. The new car clocked a second faster at Tsukuba circuit and 2 seconds faster around a slalom course. The driver credited an improved version of ACD/ super AYC which reduced understeer and added grip. The new 6-speed tranny also help extracting more speed on the straight. (wish USDM car has those ).
After the comparison test, they swapped a set of S compound tires on a stock EVO and ran it against EVO7 (350bhp) and EVO8 (330bhp) race cars. The EVO8 race car was significantly faster than the other two, but a stock EVO8 was only a second slower than the 7.
Lastly they put all trims of EVO8 (GSR, RS 6 m/t, and RS 5 m/t) against both new standard STi and STi Spec-C. The fastest car from the time attack was a Spec-C. At the starting grid, the cars were divided into 2 groups. Up front with EVO GSR and standard STi. Right behind were the two RSs and the Spec-C. They raced for 5 laps and the winner of the 1st group was an EVO GSR with better cornering speed and top end on the straight. However, the winner of the second group was a Spec-C which was slighty faster than the RSs. The driver of the RS 5 m/t was damn aggressive. He blocked the 6 m/t's driver all the way from start until finish, and they bumped into each other once. They also ran 1/4 mile and both JDM STi + a 6 speed RS clocked a 12.6. The GSR and 5 speed RS were at 12.7. Overall, a must watch video.
(sorry for the bad use of my language though, but hey I could translate the video for you guys)
p.s. Does USDM EVO rev to 8K rpm? Cause on the video, the JDM cars were redlining at 8K. "
i am gonna go buy this video after finals .
damn it.. finals!!

I havent seen any of the evos sold for those markups yet, exept for a few idiots with money to blow...
As for the "too expenisve" part, Automobile mag knows jack about the actuall price the STI will be. Many mags have been "speculating" and that is all it is, speculation. The only "fact" we have about price is a shady quote from the Detriot Autoshow something along the lines of "Low to mid 30's" which could be anywhere from 30,000 to 35,000 with 35,000 being the highest possible outcome. I suspect between 30 and 32 myself.
As for all those cars you listed, you would be hard pressed to find a faster and better sports car for the money, even at $35,000.

#1. The official price has not been released yet. There is much more evidence that suggests the car will come in at $32k, not the $35k, but only time will tell.
#2. Sure you can buy anything used, but it's used. We're talking 300hp AWD Race Bread Sports Sedan with a 5 year power train warrenty, not a car that someone else has already beat and gets like a year or so on the warrenty.
#3. Like I said above, every aspect of the cars powertrain comes from race experiance, nothing else. The only reason the car got a redesigned front end was because the Subaru World Rally Team wanted to get a better drag coff. and equal out the downforce across the car. So basically this car is not designed for people that just want a car to drive back and forth to work, it was meant to be raced.
#4. The EVO. EVO has less power, less displacment, Only Visciuos LSD diffs (No mechanical in the rear or driver controlable center), only has a 5spd gearbox, and you have to pay for things like the spoiler, which makes the car actaully come in at about $31.5k. So, while the EVO is the closest competitor, it doesn't have a lot of the true sports car features that the STi has (Not to mention a JDM EVO), making it very easy to justify the extra money, even if it is $5k
5. A lot of people think, "Gee, why not just mod a regular WRX and have an even faster car for the same or less." STi motor and driveline are designed to handle lots of power, reliably. The US EJ20 WRX block is open deck, so putting huge boost through it will eventually lead to failures. Also, there have been a lot of complaints already about the WRX'x 5spd not holding up to the power it comes from the factory. Now add more power to the equation. Just something to keep in mind.
My $0.02 is for everything above I feel the STi is way worth it.

I challenge anyone to find a car that has msrp less than 35K and outperformes the STi, (even though we are only speculating on performance of the STi), nothing comes close. The 350Z is great... if you get the touring package with brembos and extra hp, but that nears $40K. Once again, what car in the same price range comesclose to the performance of the STi, even cars under $50 hardly compare, (M3 exception).

Hi Guys,
Obviously, if you post on this site, you are a Subie fanatic!
But even FANS have their limits! I mean, I have always
wanted a Porsche, since I was 16 (I an now 48) but the
wonders from Stuttgart have always been beyond my means!
In fact I'll probably never buy one, what with the base price
of a 911 at over $65,000! Would you pay 65K for a Subie?
Heck no!
Fast is good, but so is affordable. I mean, if only 48 year
old guys can buy Sti's, the car is irrelevant. As Enzo Ferrari
once said, "The problem with Ferraris, is that only old men
can afford to buy them."
Fuji Heavy Industries needs to know: keep it cheap! That's
why I built a hot-rodded VW bug in high school: cheap, fast
and fun! That's why I drove a 20 year old Beemer, a 30 year
old Alfa Romeo, and a 35 year old Austin Healy-- they were
fun AND affordable!
I believe that the WRX is the "spiritual heir" to those cheap,
affordable sports cars and sedans of the 1960's. Those cars
allowed young guys to get interested in sports cars and
racing. They were the entry ticket to fun, cars and speed.
That's why you see so many "slammed" civics and mitsu's
and subies: fun, fast and affordable!
If only old men can afford a sports sedan, then
"when you don't get it, you don't get it" (to paraphrase
the Subie ads).

i do not think that 35k is an outrageous price to pay for an sti, based on what you receive.........one stipulation is that the dealer not get one penny over msrp....so if the sti turns up with a 32k msrp, THEN the 35k price would be ridiculous.
i will pay invoice plus 500 bucks. not a nickel more.

35K for the performance envelope you're getting is a steal!
As many examples here noted it's even a great deal when compared to other cars available.
As you know taking a WRX and adding somewhere in the neighborhood of 10K gets you STi (or better in some cases) performance. The difference with a manufacturer is they have a lot more on the line. They have to warranty the car, service the car, etc. Aftermarket companies could close up shop and go away or open up under a different name and nobody would know the difference. The point is that if you want a factory hot rod you will always have to pay a little bit more than if you put various parts on it. This is because manufacturers have their reputation and compensate by having higher design criteria than MOST aftermarket companies. Of course their are exceptions to these rules as some companies make better parts since they are only concentrating on one or two types of parts as the OEM must make EVERY part (thousands) up to snuff.
Companies can't just price the car anywhere they want. They have to make SOME money....that's what they're in business for.

Porsche, I love'em and want'em. Removing all the glamour and other intangibles of the Porche, just basing this strictly on mechanics, if a base 2003 911 Carrera was the same price as an STi, I would buy the STi hands down. I anticipate it to be faster 0-60, faster in the quarter, and just as good for track use. I'm not the least concerned about top speed. Better in bad weather, room for four (and all my junk), no leather seats (I hate leather), space to put a decent stereo system, ease of modification.
$35k is not an exotic price. It's nowhere near an "old man" price. It's just not a price for a kid working a the local pizzaria. $35k is too rich for my blood, but I'm not saying that it is not worth it. If speed is the only basis buy which you qualify worth, a 3 yr old WRX is a poor purchase. $9k+/- will get you good looking 11-sec Civic. For low-mid 30's, I can't think of a car I would rather have than an STi.
As for your original post, I found that hilarious. None of those cars would even come close. (I'm not sure about a $35k Ferrari) You have actually looked at all of the specs and features of the STi, haven't you?

I know I have. And beyond power and handling the STi has nothing else to offer.
Someone mentioned that an Evo has to pay for a spoiler. Well, an Evo comes with a radio and speakers though!
Also a G35 coupe, while slower, is in another class as far as luxury goes.
So it's not really fair to say "STi is faster than X so therefore it should be more"
I could say, "STi's interior is much less classier than X so it should be a lot less."
Obviously, a 3-series BMW did not get its price based on how fast it goes.
