how to avoid buying the new STi
I think a good reason to note might be that most of the people on this board like to mod their cars. And assuming that most of us dont have $32k lying around under our pillows, we would need to take out some sort of loan for this car. After you buy this car any mods you would do would be added onto the 32 you've already paid for the car. How much do you really wanna invest into a car, remember, cars depreciate in value all the time.
It definitely comes down to the age old question, "How fast do you want to go?" which is totally related to "How much do you want to spend?" Along with "How much performance can you get with the least amount of money?" Granted the limits of the STI's performance are prolly greater than that of the WRX, but I dont need a WRX or STI to push high 300hp @ the wheels, and I think some people can agree with that.
I dont need the fastest car on the road or an STI badge, just a fast car with AWD for a decent price. WRX fit the bill and as such, was purchased by me.
I was still pissed about just buying my car when I saw the STI specs though, maybe this is just a great big psychological sob pillow for those of us who wont be getting an STI!! ;.(
HA HA, i dont give a damn, props to anyone who gets one of these sick deathmobile's.

I have a WRX already and it works wonderfully. I have got everything I will ever need, but the STI is just so perfect that I need excuses to hold me back. Here is what I come up with.
1. HID - Who needs them? My WRX has Cool Blue blubs which are bright enough (Not!)
2. No Stereo - What? I have to pay more for FM/CD? My WRX has the speakers upgrade + subwoofer. It rocks. I would be tired of the sound of 300 hp running (Not!)
3. Current WRX is a sleeper - STI will get too much attention. I will be the first to admit that the current WRX is not pretty, but I did not buy it for the looks. Why do I need something elegant to impress the girls or what?(why not?)
4. 300hp/300torque - the 0-60 will not be that much faster. My boss's M5 will still whip me, so why bother? (But now I have a chance to win in rain)
Oh well, why try

my reasons are as follows.
500 horse power wrx's are plenty of fun.
a cracked out sti would cost me upwards of 40k
and last but not least.
my male region is allready inflamed enought with my current WRX, if i was to get a sti it (male region) could be used to club people to death in iraq, with me ever having to leave my chair.

reasons not to get STi:
reason 1 -- I already have 4 cars and would have to get rid of one to make room.
reason 2 -- Next gen M3 with 400 HP V8 looks like a nice car
reason 3 -- Maybe mazda brings back the RX-7 with 300 hp and 2800 lbs (roumor)

Reason #xx: No Freakin' Wagon!
If they had the STi available in a wagon, no problem. Sleeper, functional, practical, different.
I would buy one sight unseen, in blue. Alas, there is neigh even a mention of a wagon WRX or otherwise for the 2004 line-up.
There may be wagons reintroduced for the 2004 model year, but it still kinda stinks not having an STi option.
I still love my WRX.
. . . waiting. . .

Detroit, Michigan - Subaru introduced the redesigned 2004 Impreza WRX sedan and Sport Wagon models. Available in late March, the new WRX models feature bolder, more aggressive styling with larger headlights, now combined in a 4-element arrangement. Subaru World Rally Team designers added sharp edge character lines beginning at the headlamps and grille area and extended them onto the redesigned hood. All 2004 Impreza models adopt revised air inlets on the front fascia, and WRX models add projector beam halogen fog lamps to the list of standard equipment. The taillights and rear bumper are also redesigned. As before, Impreza WRX is available as both a sedan and a Sport Wagon.

Well, the STi IS the car I've been waiting for (and didn't know it). But, depending on your tastes, it might be the second best car for you. There's lots of talk about BMWs on here, maybe because they're nicer cars? I say this because I have a Legacy GT, and while 0-60 in 9s+ is pretty crappy, if it had a turbo I'd be pretty happy. I drove a WRX last year and thought it felt cheap. Now, I know this is my virgin post on here, and perhaps exposing myself to the sharks, but the Legacy has always felt like a nicer car. I've heard now from several sources online that there might be a Legacy B4 in the works for the US. If that is true, I'll be first in line, "sight unseen", to buy one if the price is similar. And while I love the idea of the STi (I love AWD here in VT) I don't need DCCD, or the Brembos, or all that power.
Oh, wait, I do need that power. Sorry about that
Has anyone heard anything definitive about a new Legacy? Or, about an *STi* wagon? I like the looks of the wagon a lot better.

SoA's official word is that they have no plans to sell a Legacy B4 in America. However, Car and Driver says we will eventually get a turbo Legacy, but with a 2.5 and a single turbo instead of the B4 2.0/twin-turbo setup.
As for me, the STi would still be a better car, given my rallycross hobby. Shorter wheelbase, less weight, and the active center diff would make it more versatile. I like the idea of switching to a rear power bias on dry roads. And that 300 HP won't hurt if I want to be competitive. Can't wait for Evos and STis to start showing up a rallycrosses, cuz I so like getting my *** kicked.

hey Al, what was wrong with your Sti conversion piece. wasn't that close enough to an STi? i mean, you did have basically the same engine and 6-speed transmission. that pretty much makes it a somewhat STi. i'm sure you'd smoke most of the WRX's on the track.
