Help
im 16 and bext year ill be able to buy my first car. I ve saved up enough money over the last 3 years so buy a car and i have my mind set on the subaru. I plan to get a used subaru sti so i can spend some money upgrading the engine and stuff. NOw i have little experience with cars but id like to know what are your recomemdations for upgrades, better turbo, new exhaust id just like to hear experienced tuners thoughts
The most important upgrade for someone in your situation: a brain upgrade.
Going to driver's school will let you bring out the full potential of any car you drive, after all, having an STi and only being able to drive it at 1/2 potential is a total waste, and any power mods will just make the car more and more dangerous.
I didn't mean to lecture you, but it would come up eventually anyway, might as well get it over with at the beginning of the thread

yo subaruki,
I hope you get the car. I do hope you have some brains though because a sixteen year old getting an STI is like an 85 year old getting a top of the line Silicon Graphics Workstation. If you are not careful then you will wreck the car and/or seriously injure yourself or worse. We have all the right in the world to bring these issues to your attention (or as you would say judge you). Guys your age don't yet realize why older people like me try to tell you what to do. Also WHEN you get your speeding tickets or accidents if any, OUR insurance goes up. Hard to understand but it does happen that way. Insurance companies gauge car insurance costs on the number of STI accidents/tickets divided by the number of STI drivers on the road. So in that way, you getting your STI directly affects us. But thats ok though. I don't mind having my insurance raised a few dollars because of the few sixteen year olds out there who are beginning there driving career. Just realize that where normal people learn to drive easier cars, you are trying to cut those corners and go to the baddest vehicle on the roads. Lots of guys want to get the best. Now we get to wait and see if you are man enough to handle this car in the way that a nice machine like this should be handled or whether the car is going to manhandle you.
So don't be a dumb*ss, don't get yourself kill, don't raise my insurance please, and finally welcome to the farging Subaru community.
ps, if you ever purchase a firearm, I'd suggest starting out with a fully automatic M16 assault rifle

jtibbitt, that last responce didn't sound like a mature responce. You sound like "Angry Dan" haha just kidding.
>>Hey subaruki<< here is the deal. The Sti is a cool car and quick. My advice would be to buy a used fixed up Wrx like a "01-02". Look at insurance cost for yourself and what a payment might be. Unless your down is like 10k your paymnt is going to be over $600.00 a mo. Also you have no credit hx so the car won't be in your name. The Sti would be alot of responsibilty and more than I would burden myself with at your age. Oh yea, I would feel the same way if I were you right now. We are here to help you grow and make a good choice. Also, college is right around the corner.
Here is a bad example of what happend to me when I was 16 back in 1982.. My first car was a 1970 SS/454 rated at 375hp. My first week out I ran into a tree trying to look cool doing a burn-out. Now I had been driving for a couple of months before I forgot were the brake pedal was. So here is your advice. Most importantly, ask your parents or grand parents what they would do. They are legally responsible for everything you do until you turn 18. So take this in good faith.

To FINALLY answer your question, there isn't alot of info out there since the car is new, very few tuners have come up with packages for the car yet, the best you can do is throw random parts in there and hope your car doesn't blow up.
And sure it maybe rude to judge, but it might seem rude because other people don't care about YOU the person and only care about how cool it would be for you to get a fast car without taking into account your age and skill. Maybe you're one of those people that are destined to be the next andretti, but until you grow up, don't overestimate your skill, practice is good, but nothing beats experience in the real world, which unless you've been driving illegally, i can't say you'd have much of.

Bitter
Assuming this KID does get the STi, who wants to start a pool as to when he crashes it? Back in high school I had a friend who bought a 1996 4Runner when he was 16, in the first 2 weeks he rolled it. All Im saying is that you need more experience before you can handle a car like the STi.

id give him a week before he crashes it. 300 hp and 16 yrs old do not go together. i dont' knwo how mature u are, but most 16 yr olds aren't very mature let alone some 18 year olds. get a 2.5RS to start off...then when u grow up...maybe 25 get an STI

take the advice of your elders fella
unless your dad's work vehicle is a GT car, and assuming he knows what an STi is, he should not let you get that car. I know its not what you want to hear, but its for your own good, and that of every driver on the same road as you. I'm 26 now, and i am barely ready for my regular rex.
I have been through multiple different types of driver training courses for my job; and they all helped some, but there is no replacement for time behind the wheel, and like the other guys pointed out, you just don't have it yet.
I am somewhat ashamed to say that i have already spun my rex around when i lost control, i was just lucky that there was nobody and nothing in my way. the only reason i'm saying it is to point out the fact that i have been trained as a driver for my job, and i still somehow managed to not be ready for a fast turbo car.
dude, get a gti or something and you'll spend half of what an STi costs, and you can mod it all you want; you'll have a sweet car to cut your teeth on and then by the time they get all the kinks worked out of the USDM STi, you can go down and pick one up below msrp cause the new models will be due any day... are you pickin up what we're layin down?
i'd love to go get an STi too, but there are lots of reasons for me to wait. just between you and me, the only thing old people are good for is teaching us what they learned while they got old... these guys aren't telling you not to get one cause you'll be faster than them, cause a trained driver in a regular rex could probly whip a nube in an STi, but thats besides the point; they don't want you to stack it up and get mangled (hint: the trucks i drive at work are big, red, with with the flashing lights and sirens)
I've got pictures permanently burned into my brain of more than a few kids who are dead cause they stacked up their ride. Sadly, most can be attributed to either alcohol or lack of driving experience.
do it for you mom dude, resist the STi until later; it'll still be there, and so will you.
sorry if i sound like an old duffer, but just like the other guys here, we don't want these things to go unsaid. thats what the board is all about, the LOVE... haha
take care, and for goodness sakes, do good in school, thats your ticket!!!
later, Bennie

my first car at 17 was an 85 buick grand national. It took me a long time to save up just the down payment. even though i had a lot of fun in that car, (joined scca to learn how to drive it) i was definately way too young to be driving a car that fast. just to scare you, i paid 350 dollars a month just for insurance, not including the massive speeding tickets that it gave me. remember this..... if the car CAN go fast, it WILL. I almost killed myself way too many times, but was very lucky to see the 29 years i have now. trust me, if I could redo everything, I would have bought a beater, cause when you decide to go to college, the car you have WILL get beat up, and i ruined a legendary car cause i wanted something faster than all my friends had. not cool!
some of you guys are real dicks. you don't need to say stuff like "who wants to bet how long if takes for him to get in an accident." that's rediculous. just tell him it's a serious car and to be careful. i definitely understand where you're coming from and even agree with most of it but talking about salvaging a car that he hasn't even got yet is not necessary
