G35 coupe, or sti

I have a deposit on a G35c also, 6mt DG on G w/prem and aero, which will be here in late April. I don't think I can do that yet, I need to know what the STi's MSRP will be. If its 33k or over then I'll take the G35 sacrifice some fun for luxury and looks (not to mention a few less tickets). I'll wait on spending big time until they bring us the GT-R. The AWD G35 is rumored to be arriving spring 2004 and when the new GT-R is debuted it is supposed to be world wide market, including NA. So for me either of these cars is just a stop-gap until then. Avalanche been good to you? My '00 Tahoe had minimal problems and has gotten me out of some bad spots during field work, still need a winch though.

Boy....I'm glad I'm in no rush to get my STi. I was thinking about the G35C as well. I finally has the chance to see it in person the other day and it's arguably the best looking entry level sports coupe. But once I heard about the STi, the G35C was no longer the best bang fer buck. On the bright side, NISMO's working on a turbo for the G35C (and 350Z). I'm looking forward to the results. With a stock 280hp motor, I'm sure a turbo G35C will do wonders.
An AWD GT-R would be great as well, but I also heard that Nissan may choose to export a V8 rather than a turbo'd V6. If that's the case, I'll be happy with a STi. A V8 AWD GT-R will more than likely be floating around 3500 to 4000 lbs.

I share this dilema as well. I am in desperate need of a new car and by early January I had it narrowed down to the Evo, the Z, the G35, and the STI. Evo was quickly eliminated for reasons we are all familiar with. I actually have sat in all of these 4 cars. The EVO, Z, and G35 at the LA auto show, and the STI at the Petersen Auto Museum showing. At the LA auto show, I would sit in the Z, then run over to the G35, then back to the Z and so on until it became blaringly apparent that the G35 is far supperior to the Z.
So I was down to two, G35 or STI????
Then it came to me one day.
The G35 is a luxury sports coupe. It looks absolutely amazing, performs very well (although not quite up to STI standards) and just exudes style. I would love to be seen in this car, driving it, getting out of it, picking up a girl, whatever. There is something about that car that just makes you look good. I'm only 24, and owning/driving that vehicle would help me make a particular statement to the world about my level of success and my personality. That is one of the main factors that influence anybodies' decision when it comes to choosing a ride. We all, to some extent, use our vehicles to let the world know a little something about us.
However...
I asked myself: what if I didn't care? What if there were no people to hear my statement? Better yet, What if I didn't give a flying fck what people thought? What if, for the money I have, I could drive any vehicle available in the US. The funnest, most fullfilling driving experience, most bang-for-the-buck machine I could get my hands on. In other words, what does the heart want??
Long story long... I am number 4 on my dealer's list for an STI.... Blue -- 'cause the heart wants what the heart wants.
So ask yourself, are you a true driving enthusiast? Or do you simply want to make a statement.
Dont kid yourself though, STI makes a statement of its own. That one, however, is for each of us determine for him or herself. (yes, I actually know a girl who's gettin' one)

I'm curious how you determined the G35 is "far superior" to the 350Z from just sitting in them. This is especially interesting since just sitting in a car doesn't tell you much other than ergonomics differences. In these two cars they are so mechanically similar that you would absolutely have to drive the two before making a call and in this case few people would notice more than some "differences". Choosing between two particular cars outside of measurable differences such as spec is way too personal a dicision to have people here decide for you. You have to decide for yourself. It sounds to me you like looks, style, image are more important to you so go with the G35 since you seem to like that part of it more.
Just my perception...

LanceK,
Fair question and good point. The Z is actually the better "performer" it's (I think) about 150Lbs lighter, and 6 inches shorter. Additionally, the rear strut bar offers somewhat more rigidity than the G35. I did not mention that I've also test driven both vehicles (friend works at local nissan/infinity dealer). In regular city driving (which is really all I got a chance to do with both) there is, as expected, little difference between the two. Although I didn't get to push the envelope, there was the slightest sence that the G35 was just a bigger animal, somewhat less nimble. As for the ergonomics, there really is no comparison, the G35 is definately "far superior". Just the seats alone of the G35 are the stuff of chiropractic dreams... and the rest of the trim.. forget about it! Gorgeous! Something the Z does have over the G35 is more aggresive exterior styling. Some auto magazine I read put it best when it said "It (the Z) just looks like it goes to the gym more often".

The test drive would give you a better feel.
I have only sat in the 350Z thus far, and thought it had nice ergonomics. I didn't mind the "plain" interior but thought the quality of the materials used was mediocre. I haven't seen the inside of a G35 but I suppose an upgrade in materials would make a world of difference. Kind of like sitting in two identical cars one having cloth interior and one having leather. They can have completely different "feels" to them. I love leather but it depends on the car too. In the STi I would definately want cloth but the G35 would definately be a leather car.

I test drove a g35 and I thought it was very nice. The shifter was a little notchy feeling, not the best manual I've used. The largest car I've every really driven a significant length of time was my 94 Supra and comparing that to the g35 (roughly same weight) the g35 felt too big to be tossable even though it does turn fairly well. I suspect it's more than capable for anything on the street but at the track it will prove out that it's just a sport coupe as opposed to a sports car.
BTW, the g35 DOES have the rear strut support that the Z does, it's just hidden by the bodywork. That's why the rear seat pass through is so ridiculously small.
I had a friend tell me his opinion when comparing between the g35 and the sti and it was this, "it's better to have the cheapest house in a nice neighborhood than the best house in a bad neighborhood".
When I thought about that a bit I decided, screw the house - does it go fast and handle like stink?
Sti for me.

The real measure of if a car is beautiful is if a kid stares at it and lets you know that they think it's a nice car!
That's just external, though.
In the end, you have to make your own decisions. The fact that you are asking here about this stuff means that you are caring about other people's opinions. But, you'll be happiest if you ignore everyone and listen to yourself.

Think of it this way, when yer cruising yer G35 coupe around that mountain road, you think yer doing ok, maybe passing a few cars, and you look in your rear view mirror and notice the big intake and front air dam of none other than an STi closing on your ****. You will know in your mind that you'll never be able to outrun or beat that monster in your rear view mirror on this twisty mountain road or any road for that matter. Then you will think to youself "I should've gotten an DCCD AWD Subaru STi".... Then all you will hear is the sound of a massive turbo passing you by as the waste gates and blow off valves laugh at your naturally aspirated flat torque machine.

I think that once the Turbo version of the G35Coupe is released, many of us will flock to it. It may not have an AWD platform, but it DOES have the "look" that'll justify the price and, most likely, the power to match (as well as a host of standard features, i.e., sun roof, leather seating, and free maintainance). If a 333hp M3 can best the 1/4 mile at 13.1 on a 2WD platform, I'm sure a +300hp G35C will do the same. Those of us that chooses to stay, will undoubtedly be for the AWD and 4-door capabilities...not to mention the savings of +/-$5k. Although I love the look and feel of the G35C, I've grown tiresome of coupes and need the ease of a sedan. 300hp at $32k is good enough for me...not to mention low 13's on a sedan platform.
