EVO VIII v.s. 2004 STi?
Hey, knowing that the STi's have arrived in the US, at least for testing... Be nice to know how they measure up with the EVO (acceleration/slalom/stopping,etc)... Twin-scroll turbo and FMIC v.s. 2.5L and ACVS! Depending on the outcome, I may sway one way or another! BTW, I am not planning to mod my new car... Been there, done that, cost too much money, and ended up selling my car!
So, anyone with test results, please post!!! Thanks in advance!

The choice of the right car for you is purely dependant on what is important to you. The Evo ahs been known for having more low end torque than the STi. With the larger engine and AVC, this gap may be completely closed or even better for the STi. Both should have great road holding ability. Even if the STi is priced higher, assuming it's no more than $3k. It appears to have more driver features and to have what it takes to accept more power, if you ever changed your mind about mods. IMO, Evo looks better outside and the STi looks better inside. Is 5spd vs. 6spd important to you? The STi wheels are potentially stronger. The US spec Evo lacks the ACD while the STi has a DCCD. The Evo's FMIC is a plus. The fact that they are already here is a plus. Do you want a sunroof and wing option? Evo has it. Back seat head room is better than the Evo. 235's on Evo, 225's on Sti. MUCH easier spark plug changing on Evo. Easier belt changing on STi. Short throw in STi, not in Evo. Evo has a radio (though I'd end up replacing it anyway). I think Evo has traditional throttle linkage. Seat bolstering is tighter in the Evo than the 2002 WRX. I'm sure the paint quality on the Evo can't be worst the the WRX paint. Hopefully the paint on the '04 Imprezas will be better.

I expect the STi to have similar to better low end power delivery as the Evo and considerably better mid-to-top-end power delivery. I think that theoretically, the STi may have better handling capabilities, but I don't think the average buyer will be able to get much more out of the STi than the Evo. Once again...all guess work.
I would like to hear from a current Evo owner that was/is the owner of a slightly modified (stock turbo) WRX.

as indicated by Shiv from Vishnu .
the Evo is having boost problem @ high rpm
dropping PSI fast to avoid pinging.. due to the 91 octane in CA
The STi will be running a EJ 25 .... cliaming 300 hp from a 2.5 turbo.. we can possibly assume it's running on lower PSI
which means better torque and less pinging. and possbily for better tuning potential.. as baseling psi is lower which leaves more room

Well i'm an evo owner and drove a turboxs stage 3 modded wrx for 3 months. I just want to mention that the evo has the quickest steering at 2.1 turn lock to lock and a 13:1 steering rack. It's not just quick, the suspention is very hard "harder than an integra type R" and chassis very rigid. The car handles very responsive like if you turn right you make a shift like if someone side swiped you rather than a body roll turn. Believe me the car can handle. It's hard to describe but you guys must test drive one! You'll be impressed.
Sport compact car ran 73.1mph salom and .95 g's on the skid. And i recall R&T pulled .97G's. The car can handle but the real question is could the STi out handle the evo? Anything is possible but the truth is that AYC slow you down and ACD tarmac setting is basically 50:50 so it has littling or no difference in handling on road. But rallying condition is a totally differnt story.
Both engine will have great power potentials but, all I have to say is that to out handle the Evo would be a very differicult task for Subaru.

Have you seen the EVO Vs WRX video they released in Japan?
EVOs have always outhandled STi in the past.
But we really won't know how our VIII is going to compare to the 04' STi, until it comes out. Both WRXs in the WRC are doing really, really well. Whereas the VIIIs are doing very poorly.

RichieQY - the Sti will no doubt have a very similar issue to teh Evo at high boost and high rpm...as both cars will be fighting that dreaded 91 octane
Nice thing about teh Evo is their ecu does an absoltuely awesome job at delivering consistent timing numbers, and also consistently deals with knock very wel...all 4G63 tubro ecu's have always done this. Hopefully the new STi will take some cues from the Sti ecu (OEM) offered in Japan, and give us more consistent performance (over what the std WRX ecu offers us..which is a alot of inconsistency)
