complaints and rants about STI...
well, hope the Subject attracted you, hehe.
i'm shopping between the STI and evo8 (no flames please)
i just want to get a better idea of how the new owners of the subbie liek their car.
i know some ppl are not accustomed to the noise and stuff from the road, but what about transmission problems as stated by some evo8 owners. just some, not all have probelms. please input, TIA

I have not driven the evoVIII yet but I just got my STi last week. I have 700mi. on it and I'm loving every min. The road noise is loud
and having a stereo helps but does not solve the problem. I think it handles great and i dont see why you would need it any better for day to day driving and so far i have no pinging. My brakes squeal now and then i dont no if thats normal or not but all in all I'm happy with my first new car.

why so much road noise?
I have a MY02 wrx and i dont hear that muc h road noise. Why is the STi have more road noise? Is it with the tire s that are stock? or not enough sound proofing? Im just courious. Im having fun with my wrx but if the STi comes out with paddle shifting i may get one but for now i am content.

I think the decision will depend on your current life style and that is pretty much how the magazines have been rating both cars. I for instance have a wife and a two year old. The STI or EVO is going to be a second car and the wife is going to be driving it around town from time to time....hummm, might what to think about that again
In any case - I need a car for the track since I'm a club day instructor and I don't think the van is going to apex very well.So a long story short - my take is an EVO for a harder ride, not day to day car but very good on the track OR STI for a softer ride (but still stiff), lots of bang, day to day, and still a great track car.
All the magazines are leaning towards the EVO but you are intimately the decision maker and you must drive both before you commit, that's if you can convince a friend or dealer to let you - and I'm not talking about around the block
The road noise on the STi is not because there isn't enough, its that there basically isn't sound dampening, at all. Take the door trim off and you're lookin at the vapor barrier and painted metal.

I was considering both cars too in the beginning because both have strengths and weaknesses. I think if the EVO was cheaper(which it's suppose to be) I would have bought it.
Mitsubishi hawaii is such a greedy money *****! I like when I pass the dealer in pearl city and see the same EVO still there months later. Puts a warm feeling in my heart to know that they are loosing money every day they don't sell that car.
And I mean that in a good way to mitsubishi fans, as I think that you guys deserve a dealer who doesn't want to ream you in the ***!
P.S. I talked to several mitsubishi dealers in the mainland who are willing to sell the car at MSRP but you have to pay shipping. Which I think is between $800-$1K. Hawaii also passed a trade tax, any car you buy out of state you still have to pay hawaii sales tax on if you didn't pay that state's sales tax.

I just got my STi yesterday but the road noise is not bad at all everyone that's *****in is a baby.
Also the STi is the far superior choice. Most mags barely lean towards the Evo overall and that's because price is factored in but from what i've seen and experienced you can't get an Evo for cheaper than an STi.
Sport compact ran faster in the 1/4 and lapped better than the Evo.From what i've seen in person it's the same but by bigger margins. Evo has 235's compared to STi's 225's and the STi has less damping. Both cars aftermarket suspension same tires it'll too close to tell the difference and your always be down on power.

The EVO is essentially built by Rally Art, not so much Mitsubishi... so you shouldnt have any problems with reliability. (They dont anywhere else in the world)
The STi here is brand spankin new... and as seen with the audible detonation and other problems, its not exactly the most reliable car to come along.
All the other NEW Japanese cars have been having problems as well... RX-8, G35, 350Z, etc. But nothing wrong with the EVO. EVO all the way!

The EVO is NOT "essentially" built by Rally Art, but even if it were, same difference. Do you even know what Rally Art is?
Mitsubishi has reliability problems, worldwide.
These problems were at the root of the deep reaching recent Mitsubishi scandal in Japan.
But don't believe me. Check the facts. JD Power is a good place to start.

I have owened 4 Mitu's - All had major problems that left me stranded somewhere.
I have had 5 Subaru's and they have never let me down. I have never been stranded anywhere. I have had little problems but nothing major.
I maintained the cars both the Mitu's and Subarus at higher levels most people do not. The Mitu's always had some problem that stoped them dead or could not be fixed easily.
Mitu's have all negative marks in my book. Will not even consider them in the future.
The EVO is a fast car that will probably not last 5 years. Just like the old style eclipse or talon ( Check them in Consumers Reports )

I'm w/ blue adept but also look at what what you get w/STi world famous reliability(even *** hating domestic lovers talk about it) 6speed tranny w/trochoidal oil pump, hand built limited production car, variable valve timing, active diff, and the list goes on and anything the EVO's got the STi has or has better.

bottom line: EVO8 is the shiet, STi is also the shiet, get the STi u lucky @$%@$# hehe jk, anyways get the STi because i would if i had the money. WAYYYYYYY nicer interior, more attractive. pimp ride, more power! a lot of potential!! and oh yea, lots more in a STi than EVO. man its such an easy decision, 6speed plus 300/300 plus DCCD. plus that little button on the left of ur steering wheel next to cruise, I/C spray. now thats sweet
plus!!!!! 2.5L engine!!! jesus get the STi already!

The Detonation is caused by Subaru trying to pass smog by leaning out the motor as much as possible. And an exhaust and get some form of engine managment and you will get rid of the detonation and pick up a few ponies, and rear sway bar and shake rigoriously. Bye, bye EVO, and will run forever without breaking.
