Car and Driver Review is out...
EVO by a nose overall according to them...
Some highlights...
Subie faster in a straight line (4.6, 0-60; 13.2 , 103mph)
Nicer interior, but crummy seats (?)
Broader powerband, much nicer engine
"Inexcuseable" understeer
Skidpad .9g
Evo handles like a "go kart"
Faster through the twisties
Still fast (5.0, 0-60; 13.6 , 101mph)
Engine not nearly as nice, more lag
Cheap interior
sweet Recaro seats
Skippad .9g
Still, it was VERY close, and both cars were completely fawned over. The way the review read, I still want the Sti. More of a daily driver, nicer ride, more power and more speed. Understeer should be easily correctable. (I think that aspect cost the STi the pole position.)

I must say i am dissapointed with the results of the STI in C+D. I have been torn between the EVO and the STI. By the way everyone in this forum pumped the STI I just thought it was going to be lightyears ahead of the EVO. I am more torn than ever!!!
I test drove an EVO and was most impressed. Plus I think it is much nicer to look at! I guess i can't justify 31k for either one when my 22k WRX with its little modding is just as fast (straight line)
Plus i had a tough time accepting the bug styling. I think the new WRX or STI styling is even worse! in a word UGLY!!!!

So in other words, each car has negatives and positives that pretty much cancel each other. Whichever car is "better" depends on the person buying.
I have seen R&T reviews, automobile mag reviews, C&D reviews, etc pitting each car against each other and all have come up with the same thing. To summarize, the EVO is not a daily driver, but has excellent handling. The Sti has softer suspension, but is a better daily-driver with less harsh of a ride. Both are powerful with peak torque and HP coming at different RPMS on the curves. Conclusion is that both are excellent cars.
Did anybody see the article where they were comparing the EVO with the Mosler 900, 911, Mustang Cobra, Corvette Z06, Jaguar XK-R, Ferarri, etc? They compared top speed, figure8 times, the whole gambit. It was amazing how the EVO kept up with exotics that were at least twice the price. I would be curious to see how the Sti stacks up.

Just a couple of thoughts. Not aimed at anybody in particular... just reading through several threads, got to this one, and wanted to spewand babble....
Why are there so many crybabies out there? First on evolutionm, crying over the Sti 300HP vs. our 271. Now on the impreza forums when the magazines give favorable reviews to the Evo.
Both cars are getting killer reviews. Both are amazing cars. Choose either one, and you will be stoked and grinning when you are driving. Neither is a piece of crap, both are great.
I just got back from a 2700 mile roadtrip in my Evo. Had lots of room for all my junk and luggage and camping gear..., even the the ton of junk we bought in Tijuana. Was perfectly comfortable driving 4-8 hours at a time everyday. I am not pissing blood, I have sneezed several times while driving and did not crash, and the mitsubishi did not break down 6 times as some of you subie guys might think it would.
Yes, the ride is firm, but for a lot of us, it is ok. No complaints. It ain't that bad... compared to my neon, forester and 944, its fine..... I like that ride. IT was never a problem on any road (my wife managed to sleep just fine) and even took it out on some killer dirt / gravel roads in Sedona AZ (beautiful.. if you guys get a chance, take your STi's out there. It'll be a blast). I love the car. No complaints. As for the interior, its fine. Haven't sat in an STi, but between the WRX and the Evo, I don;t see that Subaru is any nicer. The plastic on the dashtop is a step up in texture, but I think the layout / styling is nicer in the Evo. My wife likes the subaru, I like the evo. But there it's not like eithere of them is an Audi. And for my fat-*** self, the Evo seems more comfortable sitting position... but I know other people who think the Sti is far more comfortable. Depends on the individual. And for outside styling, to each his own. I hate my Evo tailights (but I am getting used to them), but the rest of the styling looks cool. It is butt-ugly in photos, but looks cool in real life.... but the Sti styling is cool also. They both look aggressive and fast.
I have a 2001 Forester also. LOVE that car. LOVE subaru. But I am pretty damn pleased with the Evo. I can;t wait to see an Sti. Not to race him... but to check the car out and admire it. Would I trade my Evo for an Sti? No way, not in a million years. I chose carefully and picked the best car for me (personal preference). Wouldn't change. But will I smile and look twice and give a wave when I see an Sti? Hell yeah... killer car. Wish I could have both. You guys are so lucky to get 'em... but I feel pretty damn lucky with my evo also.
The STi understeer??? who cares... how many of us really are gonna push our car to that limit? The STi will handle just fine for 99% of the time... better than almost anything else most of us could afford! And the EVO lacking 29HP? Again, it is fine 99% of the time. Its plenty fast for me. It definitely is NOT slow. Its fun. The Sti will be fun. Thats important.
So, all you Subaru fans (I am one also), current and future STi owners... congratulations from an Evo owner. Your cars are truly bad-***. Much respect to you. But I still love my Evo. I "admire" the Sti.... and hope you guys can do the same for the Evo. And it hasn't caused kidney damage (yet!) and the steering is just fine... I can talk on the phone, eat a burger and pick my nose while turning my head to look at the hot girl in the car next to me all while steering with my knees at 105mph (it was on the way to the grand canyon!!)... its just fine.
Enjoy the STi's!!! You are gonna love 'em. And give a wave when you see an Evo on the road!

Silvata,
Everything in a nutshell. The EVO and STi have their own quirks and perks which define the characteristics of the car. They are built for the same purpose. bang for the buck. Both do that well. Whether people like the EVO or Sti better depends on the person alone. It's your money so you buy whichever car you think you like better.
Anyways, enjoy your EVO! I have yet to see an EVO on the highway in Norcal.

right on svillata.
I just don't get some people. I like both cars as well as the G35. The point is buy what you like and be happy with it.
