Boost Controller On STi?

Is it just me or is a boost controller a bad idea on a knock sensor equipped modern turbo car?
Bad gas -> knock -> ECU requests less boost -> boost controller laughs and says: "Must...make...more...powah... -> Boom.
Probably oversimplifying things here, but wouldn't a better solution be replacing the engine management with something better, not a band-aid like a boost controller?

You get more power from running advanced timing with good A/F and good EGT's than you will from running "mad boost, yo".

This is better"i have around 500 to spend on the sti what Do u think the best bang for the $ would be"? air intake?..Dont know anything about the 4's ,I know about the V8's!
We spent $750 and are running 301 whp as opposed to 248 stock. Over 50 whp increase or over 20% increase in power. Mods? Godspeed downpipe, Turbo XS HPBC, Blitz SUS intake. With an S-AFC II and more boost we can probably get even more power. The exhaust netted boost creep though so we are going to port the turbo before we test that.

You rule. Too bad I'm not anywhere near MI so you can mess with my STi when I get it. Unless you'd be down to come to NY for a dyno session or 7. What are some reputable East Coast guys?
I'd much prefer a reflash of the stock ECU or something like a UTEC that keeps the DBW happy and doesn't trick the ECU. If Subie DBW is anything like Audi DBW, you have to be real careful about piggie-backing or throttle will get dialed back to 40% or so.
Besides, I'm a moron, I'll get silly one day, crank up the boost and shoot a rod into the car next to me. I'm all about the bolt-ons you can set and forget about. The last thing I want to worry about on a track day is blowing a rod or even knocking slightly mid-apex at a track in the middle of nowhere.
Gotta save up for that trailer, I guess.

Please don't. Adding more boost without any engine management will cause you trouble in a long run. More boost without tuning is dangerous, that's why Vishnu and Turbo XS cost $1000 and boost controller cost $125. I have seen 2 WRX suffered engine problem because of this simple "add mroe boost" idea.
