uuhhhh.....
i don't quite get your question, but i'll take a stab at it, maybe you are really good at typos... this is from memory, but the instructions spell it out in very easy detail:
when you install it, it won't read N/S/E/W correctly.
go to a big open parking lot where you can drive around in a few circles without hitting anyone. ( i had some onlookers getting curious of me, it took about 5 or 6 circles)
if i remember right, you either just push, or maybe hold in one of the buttons until the green light starts blinking,
and then drive around in tight little circles until the light stops blinking, powwww, you're done! easy cheasy.
and if it ever seems like it isn't reading directions right, just repeat the procedure for recalibration.
buh-bye
maybe your question is specifically about north:
the compass works off of magnetic north (not the actual true north, but it is designed to compensate for that)
it works just like your little boyscout compass, a magnet

IMHO, the new one is preferable because it does not obscure vision as much and blocks headlight glare better when "auto-dimmed".

I love my mirror it just adds that little bit of gadgetry to the car to make it feel less ... spartan. It's just something nice and convenient to have.

And yes, the newer mirror does come with built-in map lights (2; left and right) with an on/off button for each one.
Here's a link to a picture of a very similar model; the STi mirror looks exactly like this, except the STi model does not have the outside temperature display in the mirror (already has that in the instrument panel):

Mach5WRX, do you still have an extra res. remover?
My STi came with the autodimming mirror and compass. It has no maplights in it and seems ok. It turns blue when it's 'dimmed' and you can set it for which zone of the country your in so it gives more true readings. You can also calibrate it, which involves holding down the left button for 3 seconds, then driving in a circle. You set the zone by holding down the right button for 3 seconds, then hitting the button more to scroll through the zones. My Manual shows a diagram of the US split into 16 zones. default is 8 which runs from Mississippi up to Ohio.
Sorry to be stalking you about the resonator remover, I am thinking it didn't work when I pm'd you on nasioc. If you are out of them, do you know where i could source them?
