Sup, I got the new 04 STI.
1. What setting on the diff would you use when on the track for a 1/4 mile run? This car is hard to launch with the bog
2. Speaking of bog, I can help but notice the turbo lag. When im on the car everytime I shift I feel that little moment of studder and I hate it!! What should I do to rid myself of this...

I'd have to agree, you're probably shifting too early not getting the RPM's high enough to the point where you shift into the next gear and are still at a high enough range to keep the turbo spooled.

Nope, Shifting at optimal range, its not a bogg, its a studder. I can feel a moment of lull and then she screams.
Ive driven american muscle all my life, never does a car have this feeling unless there is a problem. Its a millisecond studder but I can still feel it.
Now from what I was told... and what I figured I would hear was...

TB exhaust will help, also look for a faster blow off valve. You may have the ping/studder problem that requires a re-flash of the ecu at the dealership.
BOV helps, catless exhaust would help more. Intakes don't help until you need them (like when you get bigger turbos).
BOV doesn't void warranty - TB exhaust will.

propain, ill tryp to help, to me it sounds like u dont know how to launch ur car yet, tahts ok cause ur car is still new, let me tell you, it takes A LOT A LOT of skills to launch the AWD car, especially the STi, in my WRX it took me 2000miles until i really knew how to launch it effectively with no lag. that studder u are describing, im sure i know what u mean, it happens because u need to ride ur clutch longer, its different than 2WD cars, the AWD, u NEED to ride the clutch longer in the gear before u let go,
the STi will wooooooooooop any cars ***, its just that lots of people dont know how to drive it the right way. seriously. it takes lot of skills, so keep that in mind and dont rush urself ok, u will be good eventually as long as u keep trying and learning the small details,
ok that studder.. im sure its because of this, you are letting go of the clutch when u are just barely hitting 3000rpm or less, dont totally let go of the clutch until you hit about 3500rpm. when u ride the clutch up to 3000 and let go, on my wrx, the itll spool perfectly and vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrsssssssssssssssssssssssssss TTT all of a sudden the turbo will kick in MEANN. but how mean ur turbo kiks depends on how u release the clutch and add the gas, the timing is very very very, and i repeat, VERY crucial. that is why u feel that studder because u are punching it when ur turbo isnt totally ready to be kicked in. u need to ride the clutch so that ur rpm jumps to 3000 or 35000 then full throttle the gas.. its hard to explain but this is the best i can do, u need to try and picture wat im saying and hopelly i did some help. anyways, just remember the WRX cars are take lots more skills to drive, my friend is a good driver, but he is good at 2wd, he drove a prelude vtec and smoked my other friend that was a not so good driver in a 2000type R. driving skills matter a lot. but then wen i let my friend in the prelude drive my wrx, he kept bogging on the launches, in each gear, thats because he treated the launches like a 2wd car, but my wrx is AWD so it takes different and maybe harder skills.
bottom line: takes real skills to really launch the sti, its not a forgiving at all, either u launch it perfectly, or you launch it and bog or with bad lag, its supposed to be perfect launches consistently.

Launch
I was having the same problem launching my STi. Just about every WRX owner I have spoken to has said to rev to 3000 - 4000 RPM and ride the clutch just a little. I tried it and the car took of like mad - no bog.
I have to admit that I am a little worried about clutch wear. But I have been told by numerious WRX owners that the clutch is up to the task and our STi clutch should be sronger yet.

Thanks for the help. The STI is a very different animal from anything that I have driven. But im getting the hang of it. Only about 350 miles so I havent started launching the car from a dead stop yet.
But when shifting at speed what you said seems logical. On an american car without a turbo this problem doesnt exist.
Thanks for the info!

are u thanking me propain?? hehe well your welcome.. hehe =)
anyways yea, dont worry about clutch wear fellas. the WRX's come with racing clucthes, and the STi clutch is even stronger, basically as long as we dont smell any clutch.. us riding the clutch perfectly will not harm the clutch, its meant to handle our daily driving and daily punishment. as long as we dont SMell any clutch, itll be just fine, so dont worri about riding ur clutch, its made for us to ride.
have fun! GO IMPREZA!!!!!!

I smell clutch constantly after getting on the car. Maybe cause of breakin period.
Ive been driving stick for the last 10 years so even though its a different car, It cant be THAT different.
You must ride the clutch to launch it from the hole. That is where I think im smelling the clutch. But you must also slip the clutch a bit to spool up that turbo for smooth aceleration, so im probably getting clutch smell from that too....
