Help a noob w/STi sound system

OK, getting ready to install a sound system in my STi. Problem is, I can't remember the last time I put an aftermarket system in a car; probably back when the component options were AM, FM, cassette, and (if you were super cool) a graphic EQ.
In any event, I want to get one of those fancy (=$$$$) HUs w/navigation. Probably the Eclipse AVN-2454 or Kenwood DDX7015+DNA-DV3100. This throws a major hurt on the old wallet, so I'm wondering where I should make compromises... I listen to rock, mostly, and jazz occasionally. Ideal budget would be $500, but I can probably stretch that toward $750.
My current thinking is that I'll have to do without speakers for the rear door and a sub-woofer. I was thinking that decent component speakers for the front, sound-proofing, wiring, and possibly an inexpensive amp should be the priorities. Ideally, I'd like to have an installer run all the wiring so that I can easily install/upgrade stuff when I have more money; I'd just as soon not have to pull out the rear seat, tear up the carpet, etc.
Thoughts? Equipment suggestions?
Thanks for the help!!!

Try www.carreview.com they have an audio review section with tons of product. That should be a good starting point.

Don't need reviews of major components so much (this site is already great for that!), more whether the approach makes sense and also, to some degree, info on the parts that don't normally get mentioned/reviewed (e.g. wiring harness, spacers, cables, etc).
If your on a budget, id get a decent 2 channel or 4 channel (if you want rear speakers later) amp and run that to 2 6.5" good .front components then soundproof the doors.
