Focal Utopias
Anyone know someone or had experience with Focal Utopias 136w, 165w, or 180w's? I want to get them for my fronts, but I'm concerned with the mounting depth being 3", I've heard people have had luck getting 2.5" depth speakers put in with spacers, but I'm wondering if 3" is even feesible.
I'd much prefer getting these over the Polyglass Slims, my other option was Diamond Audio Hex s600s, which I had in my prior car, but as of hearing the recent failure rates going out of control I'm gonna avoid them this time around.
thanks,
j

Focals are good, i would say right up there with the diamond audios, in my last car i went with the diamonds over focals and was not dissapointed. I have upgraded the speakers in my doors with JL XR's but had to make a custom mount and cover due to limited space, there was no other way to get them to fit unfortunately. Good luck!
It will be hard to fit the utopias in but i have seen people use cdt's and their 3" deep too like the utopias. I have the 165v2 with 2.75" mounting depth and used 3/4" spacer plus the thickness of the dynamat, it barely fit. I think you will have to adjust the window spacers to fit 3" deep speakers. Try searching in nasioc too.

I have focal utopia 3 ways in the front (165w3) and the 2 ways (165w) in the rear. i had to use a spacer for the front doors, and the spkrs tap the door panel under high excursion. the window jus barly clears the magnet, but it does.
I made some fiberglass kickpanels for the 4" spkrs and I am putting a 40kx (16" k2 power sub) upside down in the wheel well. I will post pics of that soon. I have pics of the doors and kicks if you are interested.

Well, i went with utopias because of my hefty 75% discount
As for the tapping, alittle bit of trimming and some spacers against the door panel, problem solved.
I designed the system in my car to be rediculous so my installer would have some fun with the cust. work.
Mikes system:
165w3 front
165w rear
40kx 16" sub
x604 Xtant 4ch amp
x1001 Xtant 1ch amp
AND Lots of fiber glass and resin
