Best 10" sub?

I currently have a RF Punch Series 2 10" sub.

I want to stay with a 10" driver for space reasons, but I feel like I can do better than the Punch S2.

Suggestions?

there is no "best" sub.
it all comes down to how much you want to spend and how much power are you going to be running.
what is the RMS of your current amp?

My current amp is 200 watts RMS.

I'm willing to upgrade the amp as well. If I go with a new amp and driver I'd like to spend no more than $600.

My priorities are extension and agility over SPL. I'd rather have something with smooth response down to it's lower limit rather than something that provides big boom at 40hz and whimpers at 25hz.

if your going with the amp you have, and you want good response and sound quality get the boston acoustic. theyre awesome at lower power. and they are not spl subs.
rf sucks. power hungry and muddy.

If you want a quality sub and a new amp, just get one 10" JL Audio W7, a JL Audio 500/1 amp, and a good enclosed box, and call it a day. It'll thump harder than both your RF subs anyday. The price is the only drawback.

The sound quality of the BA 10 is great but there is going to be a noticeable rolloff below 40hz. If you want significant output at 25hz you are going to want to step up to a 12" or maybe the JL w7, which will require a much larger box.

The JL W7 has a reputation for being really loud. I don't necessarily want really loud - just really low. Is it impossible to go low without also going loud?

as he said, 500/1 and JLW7 is the way to go, for a ten inch sub that is..you could also go w/ the mtx 9500 10 inch sub...but the JL amp is one of the best monoblock 500/1 amps..i really like/reccomend it...one thing i would do differently is go w/ a ported box, not sealed..just my own preference..sealed more punchy, ported deeper, louder. just my 2 cents

It is only as loud as you make it. If you want to stick with the Boston and the smaller box you could do that and go with the 500/1 amp. The amp puts out more rms than the sub can handle so you have to be careful not to overdrive the sub but it also has a one-band parametric eq built in which could be used to counteract the rolloff. Likewise, the Boston Acoustics Amps have something called Q-tune which is supposed to do the same. On the Boston website they show the G210 in a sealed box with Q-tune rolling off around 25hz vs 50hz without, but I haven't heard it and don't know how good they are. I don't like ported boxes because they tend to sound a little boomy, typically for good sound quality a sealed box will give a flatter frequency response while a ported box will be louder but tend to really overemphasize their tuned frequency.

If you get a BA, then you want it in a sealed box. The reason why you would pick the BA over the JL is BA is better for very crisp, clean, musical sound. The sealed box will give the bass the tighter, sharper sound. If you want a louder, boomier sound then the JL would be good or a ported box.

Did some pricing and the JL W7 is certainly out of my budget range. I'm probably going to go with the BA suggestion and a BA amp to match the sub's rated power handling.
