96 outback factory stereo removal
2 piece system. Stereo is mounted on top, seperate dealer installed cd player mounted below.
I want to remove both and replace with a cd receiver.
Any advice. I am concerned I might mess up taking it apart and then reassemble would be tough. I can see the dash messed up.
I saw this thread:

Any idea if that would be similar? If not, where might I find good reference material (free of course)?
Thanks to all.

No, it's completely different.
I'll find some instructions that I found for someone else and post them for you.
Also, is the 96 a typo? There was no 96 outback, the first one was a 97 model year.

might help you out.
I assume it's a legacy outback you're talking about? If not I think the older Impreza outback sports were similar to this.

Weird, all the auto sites I've read say the first outback was 97 so I guess they and I were wrong
That looks very similiar to my buddies old 98 Outback. The isnstructions I posted above worked on it so you should be good. Just make sure to get the screws under the ash tray. Also be careful when pulling the trim. His was a manual so it was easier to realign it all but it'll be trickier on an auto.
