Subaru hired a guy from BMW to style their cars...
Althought I wouldn't say the current WRX is ugly, the new STI looks alot better. I think the current WRX would have been cool with the JDM projectors, but who knows why we didn't get em. Anyways, heres an interesting article from USA today:

did BMW design the Mini Cooper? I don't see how it would make any difference since the Mini has bug-eye lights as well.

Actually, the new Subaru chief designer Andreas Zapatinas is more known as a designer for Fiat/Alfa.
His masterpiece are Alfa 147 and Fiat Barchetta.
