STI pricing info

I was at the LA Auto Show yesterday and was probably the first one to get the new STI brochures. Well there isn't much on these STI brochures that is different from the announcement that Subaru made yesterday. I was speaking to the Subaru Rep at the show yesterday and he told me that pricing hasn't been released yet, but he said that the price may be around $35K. Kinda high in my books.

35k damn, I'll be lucky if I can at least sell my RS for 15k. Thats a lot for a Suby. But for the price range it dominates in that market.

Yeah I hope that they drop the price, because in that range, i'd get myself a Z or some other kinda car. $35 K is really really, pushing it, unless the body was all Aluminum or something.

35K will have a lot of competition

$35,000 gets you a choice of Infinitis, like the G35 4-door or coupe.

It gets you just about any form of Nissan Z

It gets you an Audi TT

....several Lexus models

....a Ford Mustang SVT and darn near gets you the convertable model.

....a Honda S2000

...Just about gets you a T-Bird

...just a hair under a W8 Passat

all from a "realatively" obscure Japaneese manufacturer (present company excluded, of course). Don't get me wrong, I love the STI, I crave the STI and it would be my first choice in cars. Unfortunately, $35,000 is more than I am willing to pay for any car and I believe those who are willing to pay that are more likely to get something with a little more prestige (Infiniti/Audi/etc). Put that thing at $28,521 (same as the Z) and give me a call. Pricing it higher than an Infinit 35/Nissan Z is a little much.

Just to keep it in perspective, many people are posting that they are buying WRXs for ~$22,500. $6,000 is plenty to pay for the upgrades. Come to think of it, it's too much. $13,000 extra is just plain rediculous.

Just my 2c.

dealer mark up

I bought a WRX last month. I had considered waiting for the STi. After speaking with the dealer on the expected arrival of the STi, I asked about the price. He said it would be in the range of $35k plus $4k in dealer mark up. I thought about it for a few weeks and then bought the WRX elsewhere.

two reasons I bought elsewhere. (1) if he wasn't telling me the truth, it was to get me to buy now. (2) if he was telling the truth, I wouldn't want to do business with a dealer that was pre-planning how much to gouge a buyer.

We couldn't but Subaru could

It is always much more expensive to upgrade an existing car than to build a car with the upgrades already there.

1. you pay for parts twice (ie 16" and 17" wheels)

2. Mass production costs less for the factory than retail for the end user.

3. You have to pay for the work twice. That includes more than just installation, it includes design and testing as well.

The point was that $35K was too much to ask. Since then, I have read that Motortrend expects $30K and so does my local Subaru dealer. That is much more in line.

I am glad you love your WRX, I am just about to buy my first. I am glad you love the upgrading, I will probably upgrade too (though not 7K worth, I expect). I too am very impressed with the STi and would love to have one. I just cannot, in good concience spend that on a car.

My post was simply that those who can pay that for a car, probably will opt for a more prestigiuos vehicle. BMW, Infiniti, etc. I certainly don't have anything bad to say about the WRX in any form.

I am mostly dissapointed that they are not offering any rebates on left over models. I see no reason to buy an '03 when the '04 will be here in 2 months at the ~same price.

I agree with you Eric that the STI is a great car to have even if the projected retail is 35k. I also agree with you that the Nissan Z is slow and not the impressive and has the altima/maxima engine, but its the looks that count! The chicks dig the Z's! Anyways, what I am trying to say is that there are alot of cars in the 35k price range that will bring you a higher prestige, unless they totally redesign the look of the STI to make it different from the WRX.

I've gone 155 in my RS, because it doesn't have a speed limiter!
