STI pricing info
I was at the LA Auto Show yesterday and was probably the first one to get the new STI brochures. Well there isn't much on these STI brochures that is different from the announcement that Subaru made yesterday. I was speaking to the Subaru Rep at the show yesterday and he told me that pricing hasn't been released yet, but he said that the price may be around $35K. Kinda high in my books.

Yeah I hope that they drop the price, because in that range, i'd get myself a Z or some other kinda car. $35 K is really really, pushing it, unless the body was all Aluminum or something.

35K will have a lot of competition
$35,000 gets you a choice of Infinitis, like the G35 4-door or coupe.
It gets you just about any form of Nissan Z
It gets you an Audi TT
....several Lexus models
....a Ford Mustang SVT and darn near gets you the convertable model.
....a Honda S2000
...Just about gets you a T-Bird
...just a hair under a W8 Passat
all from a "realatively" obscure Japaneese manufacturer (present company excluded, of course). Don't get me wrong, I love the STI, I crave the STI and it would be my first choice in cars. Unfortunately, $35,000 is more than I am willing to pay for any car and I believe those who are willing to pay that are more likely to get something with a little more prestige (Infiniti/Audi/etc). Put that thing at $28,521 (same as the Z) and give me a call. Pricing it higher than an Infinit 35/Nissan Z is a little much.
Just to keep it in perspective, many people are posting that they are buying WRXs for ~$22,500. $6,000 is plenty to pay for the upgrades. Come to think of it, it's too much. $13,000 extra is just plain rediculous.
Just my 2c.

dealer mark up
I bought a WRX last month. I had considered waiting for the STi. After speaking with the dealer on the expected arrival of the STi, I asked about the price. He said it would be in the range of $35k plus $4k in dealer mark up. I thought about it for a few weeks and then bought the WRX elsewhere.
two reasons I bought elsewhere. (1) if he wasn't telling me the truth, it was to get me to buy now. (2) if he was telling the truth, I wouldn't want to do business with a dealer that was pre-planning how much to gouge a buyer.

thats what im thinking...35000 is a grip of cash...and it dosent come with a stereo either...
i dunno, for that kind of money i would expect luxury and not have a car that rely's on performance....
I would rather buy a badass mercedes, BMW, lexus anything like that for that kind of cash just for the pimp status .... for that price my main choice would be the G35 just cause that car is the badass of the badass....
ill just stick with my WRX

i do not think the nissan Z and g35 are all that. i've seen the Z at 2 seperate track days and it didn't outperform the less priced wrx. pretty weak for a "sports car". just my opinion.
the STi is not for everyone. but for all of you who complain about the price, think about the guys who have spent $20-30k on their wrxs since they bought them in 2001. how about the people who spent $10,000 for the same 6 speed tranny that comes standard in the 2004 STi? and yes, there are several guys in southern california alone who have spent that much, and they still don't have all the features of the STi. i do appreciate their cars and their hard work, though. and i think it's cool to be able to say you were one of the first people to customize a wrx in america.
i have spent over $7,000 personally (probably more, actually), and i don't regret it. i think my car is great and i still feel the wrx is an awesome car and will always be one of the great sport sedans, even with the STi getting most of the attention at the moment. next car i get will definitely be a subaru. i love my car. i'm looking to get a B4 or STi in a few years if i can afford it. they're only going to get better. i'm really impressed with the STi, and anyone who has spent money upgrading their car will appreciate little things like the aluminum control arms and the upgraded brakes. that crap is expensive. you could never turn a wrx into an STi for under $10,000.
We couldn't but Subaru could
It is always much more expensive to upgrade an existing car than to build a car with the upgrades already there.
1. you pay for parts twice (ie 16" and 17" wheels)
2. Mass production costs less for the factory than retail for the end user.
3. You have to pay for the work twice. That includes more than just installation, it includes design and testing as well.
The point was that $35K was too much to ask. Since then, I have read that Motortrend expects $30K and so does my local Subaru dealer. That is much more in line.
I am glad you love your WRX, I am just about to buy my first. I am glad you love the upgrading, I will probably upgrade too (though not 7K worth, I expect). I too am very impressed with the STi and would love to have one. I just cannot, in good concience spend that on a car.
My post was simply that those who can pay that for a car, probably will opt for a more prestigiuos vehicle. BMW, Infiniti, etc. I certainly don't have anything bad to say about the WRX in any form.
I am mostly dissapointed that they are not offering any rebates on left over models. I see no reason to buy an '03 when the '04 will be here in 2 months at the ~same price.

even on a track it's all but impossible. but the Z is a totally different car from the impreza. a better comparison would be the sentra se-r spec-v and the STi. now which one would you want?
but anyway, we haven't heard a set price yet. if it is $30k, that is a great price. i heard it will be competitive with the evolution pricewise. we'll see.

I agree with you Eric that the STI is a great car to have even if the projected retail is 35k. I also agree with you that the Nissan Z is slow and not the impressive and has the altima/maxima engine, but its the looks that count! The chicks dig the Z's! Anyways, what I am trying to say is that there are alot of cars in the 35k price range that will bring you a higher prestige, unless they totally redesign the look of the STI to make it different from the WRX.

I've gone 155 in my RS, because it doesn't have a speed limiter!

and yeah, the wrx much be ugly or not have enough luxury for some people, but it is not a luxury car. it is a subaru. and subru is known for their wacky cars. the STi happens to be one of them. think about it. no one else (except mitsubishi) has a car with that much performance in a sedan. it's because people either want a sports car or they want a luxury car, or they want a car that's cheap but looks fast. most people don't want a car that looks cheap but IS fast. well, i do.

I would not pay $35 for a sti. That way to much and they going to mark it up. The subaru dealer are just taking advantage of the customer that love subaru. I think they should atleast give you more stuff in the car if your paying that much. Other car for that price you would atleast get leather seats and a sun roof. Atleast you see some reason you to pay 35 for a car. We all just got to wait and see how much the mark it up when it comes out.
