Speed

You can figure the speed you need to travel to get to your destination at a certain time. 60 (minutes) times D (distance) divided by T (time) equals speed.

60 D = S
T

or

60 D ÷ T = S

You are meeting a friend 20 miles away in 1 hour and 20 minutes . How fast will you have to travel to be there at the right time?

60 x 20 ÷ 80 = S

Your speed will be 15 mph.

 

If you know your rate of speed and how long you have traveled, you can figure out how far you have come. S (speed) times T (time) divided by 60 (minutes) equals D (distance). Your formula is:

Distance D = ST
60

or

S x T ÷ 60 = D

You are going to the fishing grounds and know you must travel 14 mph for 1 hr. and 30 minutes. How far out are you going?

14 x 90 ÷ 60 = D

Your distance will be 21 miles.

 

Time

To figure how long it is going to take to reach your destination you will need to know how fast you will be traveling and how far you are going. 60 (minutes) times D (distance) divided by S (speed) equals time. The formula for this is:

60 D = T
S

or

60 D ÷ S = T

If you are traveling at a speed of 15 mph and need to go 25 miles your formula will look like this.

60 x 25 ÷ 15 = T

Your time will be 100 minutes or 1 hour and 40 minutes.
