LANCASTER, Calif. (April 20, 2004) - - The JAOS Western Mojave Adventure Rally presented by Magellan, May 8 and 9, 2004 offers a unique two-day scenic tour and GPS-navigation competition for owners of SUV and AWD vehicles looking for an interesting weekend get-away adventure. Headquartered at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds 40-minutes north of Los Angeles during the Rim of the World Rally motorsport weekend, this event allows experienced as well as first time off-roaders a chance to drive the pioneer trails of the Southern California Desert. Adventure Rally teams make scheduled stops at scenic old mining towns, meet unusual "desert characters", and discover mountain villages and seldom-visited historic sites along the way. Utilizing hand held GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) units and coded instructions, competitors are challenged with a treasure hunt, questions, time-speed-distance legs, and a poker run as part of Sunday's JAOS Adventure Rally activities.
Online pre-registration and entry is available until May 5 at www.rallyusa.com, click on JAOS Adventure Rally. Saturday, May 8, on-site registration opens at 9:00 a.m. in the second building at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 2551 West Avenue H in Lancaster. Class begins at 10:30, followed by a 2:00 practice rally and 4:00 question and answer session. The official Adventure Rally Welcome is at 6:30 p.m.
Sunday's Adventure Rally Drivers' Meeting and START is 6:30 a.m. at Palmdale's Holiday Inn Hotel, 38630 Fifth Street West in Palmdale. (Call (661) 947-8055 and ask for the "2-USA" rate.) Deluxe $265 entry includes one Magellan GPS unit, Saturday's training class and activities, and an up-to-four-person team event entry. The $165 entry is for those with a GPS unit, and also includes a four-person team.
The 2004 JAOS Western Mojave Adventure Rally presented by Magellan joins with the Rim of the World Rally activities scheduled Friday May 7 through Saturday May 8 that include the ProRally Service area, an European-style “side-by-side” rally Stadium SuperStage competition, an indoor Rally EXPO, and hundreds of cars from various enthusiast clubs on public display.
