Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

14.5 psi = 227hp too little power for the boost?

14.5 psi = 227hp too little power for the boost?

hey im just curious about something i was thinking the other day.
i had a jetta 1994 with a 2.0 8 valve! sohc engine (yeah it sounds pretty bad for an engine right) it came with 115 hp stock. well i put a turbo on it, with 2 1/4 in exhaust system, air filter an ecu chip and 260 cam (just one hehe).

i was only running 6 psi on the car and i got a 0-60 in 6.9 secs which is not pretty bad since the stock 0-60 is 10.5 secs. so here is my point the subaru has a much better power plant right, with a boxter engine and i guess the impreza rs comes with 165hp (maybe i have numbers wrong) so if you add the 14.5 psi that the wrx comes with, don't you guys think it should come with much more horses than 227hp?
i know its got a really good 0-60 in like 5.6 but its just that i was wondering about this.

i hope i didn't make anybody upset don't get me wrong im not saying the jetta is better than a wrx at all. its just that im curious and would like to get your opinion on this.

the rex is a 2.0 the rs is 2.5, more displacement usually = more torque+power. I own both a 1.8t 04 gli and a 03 wrx and the rex is much faster. bla bla bla.
ps I think a wrx only gets like 13 psi at best, mine does ne ways.

I drove a VW with that engine for a couple years. Keep in mind the WRX engine is built to handle turbo power so if you bolt a better turbo on you'll be making maybe 300hp at the wheels, plus all the support parts. There's a lot of factors that differentiate these motors, plus keep in mind the stock WRX turbo aint the best.

Thinking about turbo'ing that 2.0 VW block....that thing was slow as molasses, I can't imagine it getting much faster.

One of the biggest diffrences between the RS motor and the WRX or even the STi motor is the compresion ratio. In the RS your pushing a 10:1 compression ratio where as in a WRX your only at 8:1. The reason is by adding boost your basicly upping the compression since you're cramming more air and fuel than you would normally. Also typically NA heads have better flow rates than Turbo heads. Thats why you can get so much power for little psi on your VW motor.

compression ratio. when you turbo'd a N/A motor, you still had a relatively high compression ratio. the wrx motor was built to for forced induction, so the compression ratio is considerably lower. how long would you have expected your jetta's motor to last boosted even only at 6psi?

These guys got it right. Your vw 2.0 was a high compression NA engine to start with. With 6psi, I'm assuming you didn't lower the compression with a thicker headgasket, so it'll almost deffinately make a lot more power than a wrx motor on 6psi. BTW, I used to a have 98 VR6 running 10psi out of a vortech blower on stock compression. That thing was a freeway monster but couldn't hook up off the line.
