downpipe installation

hey everyone,
Just picked up a used bosal downpipe (for $50 :-D ) and was wondering if you all had any tips for doing the installation? I have basic tools/knowledge, but a lack of directions since it is used. I tried searching around for directions, but couldn't find any. Should I spring for new gaskets from the dealer or can I get by with the old ones (33k miles)? What do I torque the bolts to? any help is greatly appreciated.

From what I understand, a whole new gasket set is ALWAYS a good idea. SubyDude.com has them, and at a good price. For the instructions you can try searching scoobymods.com. I think the install instructions are by Perrin, but obviously will work for any UP. I would also reccomend getting a Down Pipe and putting tht on at the same time since the DP has to come off when installing the UP. Good Luck!

I kept thinking Uppipe... so ignore my post. If you are ever wondering about an Uppipe install then what I said is true. ;-)

downpipe is really easy. Just jack the car up, take off the heatshield, remove the 5 bolts from the turbo to downpipe then the 2 from the downpipe to catback. Then remove the rear o2 sensor and take off the dp bracket bolts. Once all bolts are off you get a screwdriver and pry that bracket type piece off that holds the dp in place. Then just reverse the order and your all done. Shouldn't take more than an hour to an hour and a half, but ive heard stories of some noob taking 6 hours....

Old gaskets will work find for downpipe to turbo installatuion. I did w/o it. No leaks. I would recommend trying to get downpipe to transmision bolt loose 1st. Don't know what kind of tools you have, but I needed to go buy a skinnier tool for that bolt. Its bracket just gets in the way.

you can get the o2 sensor off from midpipe with a big open end wrench i forgot what size, but its easily accessable, unlike the damn header one. as far as the gaskets, get new ones but not from the dealership becaues you will be paying twice as much.

you dont need to replace the downpipe gasket. It is very rare for that to leak, ive taken off my downpipe about 3 times since putting it on and have never had leaks. The exhaust manifold to uppipe should be changed though when installing an uppipe since that area is known for leaking.

Heat shield = good. The hot turbo will heat your IC quicker, as well as brown up your firewall. Search around, there's an easy way to trim it to make it fit well with aftermarket DP's.
