500 miles too soon for 1st oil change?

The Tech here where I work (DANA) said to change the oil at 500 miles. I've been using the search, but have not found an answer to this. He said he actually changed the oil a number of times on his late 80's Camaro RS before 1K, and now with 130K still runs very well. I see his point about getting the metal shavings out of the engine, but is this too excessive/too soon? Is the factory oil different from the regular dino I got to put in (as in it won't break in correctly if I do change the oil at 500)? This is my first new car, and I've been hearing/reading tons of different opinions.
there's really different opinions on when the frist oil change is. Some people believe tehy use a special type of oil in the car when u first get it, and u shouldn't change the oil until 3000. Just go easy on the car and u'll be fine, besides break in period is 1000miles anyways
My thought is that if your engine breaks in by 1,000 miles then all the metal debris should be in the metal by then or most of it. I changed mine at 1,000 and it is going perfect. It is your choice, I don't think you can do it too early really, so yeah if you wanted to you can do it at 500. Good Luck

from what i know, my uncle who is a mechanic and works on cars told me usually he doesn't recommend the first oil change unless it's 3000. ON the other hand, some cars like Mercedes and such tell you NOT to change the oil until 10,000

you know everyone has different throughts on this. Everyone seems to agree that you should not use Synthetic until couple of oil changes and as for the first oil change I would go by the owner manual. I am pretty shure they would know what is best for the car.

I changed out the stock oil at 1200, with dino. Changed again with dino at 3300. Changed to synthetic at 7400. No blowby or missing oil yet, butl I'm only at about 10k now.

Along these lines has anyone experienced oil burnoff while the car is breaking in. I know that certain performance cars like the M3 guzzle oil until the motor is properly broken in. Is this something I should keep an eye on or does the wrx not experience this?
