Odd vibration and sound from engine.... (and a quick one on clutch shudder)

Hello all,

I'm trying to diagnose a vibration problem with my engine on a stock '02 WRX wagon. It is idling pretty hard and at around 3,750 there is a noticeable vibration in the gas pedal, cluctch pedal and stick shift - the engine also "changes tone" at about this time - it just sounds a lot more rough. This happens even if I'm sitting still and just rev it up.

I've only had the car for 6 months - and I'm pretty sure it wasn't this way when I got it - it has just kind of developed over the past several months.

Also - over the past several months I've noticed that during idle and low RPM driving (like in a parking lot) there is something that almost sounds like a soft knock. It isn't very loud - just a soft dull click. It seems to be worse when it is cold outside - but it happens even after the car warms up.

I took it to the dealer a couple of months ago with these problems and they couldn't find anything wrong. But I feel it has gotten worse since then. Also note that I drive on it pretty hard... not insane, just hard (as I'm sure most WRX owners do....)

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I just being paranoid?? Should I just drive it and not worry about it?

One last thing.... I'm getting the "clutch shudder" - especially on cold damp mornings. Has anyone recently been able to get the dealer to fix that - I have 37,000 miles on the car (I bought it with just 18,000 six months ago! I've done a lot of moving).

Your clutch is most likely shot.

What mods do you have?

No mods - completely stock.

I've never done any dragging or racing of any kind. Just the normal "I finally have a fast car!" driving that you do when you get your first non-Civic car ;-)

Also note that this happens even if the clutch isn't engaged.... as in - I'm sitting still and push in the clutch pedal and rev it to 3,750 and I can feel the vibrations. Also - it's not just "right at" 3,750 that just happens to be when its the worst - the vibrations kind of grow after 3,000 RPMS (I know this would point to some sort of Turbo problem - but remember that this happens when I'm sitting still and the turbo isn't even being spooled up).
