I started having another problem with my car a couple weeks ago ('95 L w/ RS drivetrain)...
When I drive over small bumps, or even when I start/stop the car when driving (IE braking to a stop slowly, or accelerating just a little from a stop) I have this wierd squeek that is coming from my front left wheel.
Now I tryed to figure out what it was, first I thought it was the strut but when I had someone test it while I stood next to it it was coming from the wheel area.
Yesterday I took off the wheel and the rotor too, and notice that with the driver side axle I would turn the hub and it would be loose for a sec then clunk and turn normally. The passanger side does not do that, it just turns normally I think that is what is causing the squeek but im not 100% on that...
I thought it might be the wheel bearing, but I was just pming adam at LIC (I bought the car from LIC) and he said the wheel bearing usually gets noiser as you go faster, but like I said this is only when the car hits a bump on that wheel or shifts its weight at a start/stop.
Could it still be the wheel bearing? Or is it the Axle, or even the front Diff???
I think Ill stop by DBT tommorow since its close (but my cousin is back from Iraq and he is visiting tommorow until ~3:30) and see what Paul and Rick think...
But before that I thought I would see if anyone else has had this issue with a scoob before.
Also, my throwout bearing has been going bad for awhile. It does the rattle-squeek when the car is in neutral and you let off the clutch. Its pretty bad now, but with having all these problems with the car PLUS needed new tires AND not having much of any money right now from student teaching makes this a pretty ackward situation to say the least...
Anyway, let me know if anyone might know anything about this...

+1 for the CV joint.
grab it and twist, you might feel some play. if so, its bad.
might also jack up the car and have a friend turn the wheel from lock-to-lock while you watch the joint or rotate the wheel slowly by hand (normally done on a lift or stands).
you may here a grinding sound, a click, or a clunk depending on what the extent of the bearing failure inside the CV joint.
any abnormal sound/movement/play should be considered a reason to replace.
a good CV joint will both rotate and spin smoothly at all angles.
