You sac guys are so screwed

The Sacramento City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that makes it illegal to be a spectator at an illegal street race.

On Thursday the council approved the ordinance, which specifies a fine of $500 for the first offense and $1,000 for for subsequent violations. Any conviction could carry a jail term of up to six months.

Illegal street races often attract hundreds of spectators and sometimes turn deadly. last July 16-year-old Viridiana Torres died after being shot at an illegal street race on Younger Creek Road.

Police officials urged the council to pass the ordinance, saying spectators are just as much a part of the problem as the driver. They believe the ordinance will provide a needed law enforcement tool and help save the lives of racers and onlookers.

I honestly don't see why they are so interested in saving the lives of street racers and onlookers.

Who they should really be trying to save are the innocents bystanders who get smashed into at these things.

Umm.. its always been illegal. It used to carry a $250 fine for "contributing to a contest of speed"

This was back in 95-96.. so more useless laws being passed to make the city look like they are doing something about a problem.

I never got one of the tickets.. I knew people that did.

How much does it cost to drag at Sac raceway?
How much is a ticket for street racing?
Cars should be impounded & crushed on first offense.

actually, i think it's a good idea to bust the spectators too. in the past, all they'd get is a warning or maybe a fix-it ticket if busted watching.

by nature, street racers are attention ******. if you take away their audience they just might not race.

I agree.

I also agree with Scott. It's just another law that sweeps the problem under the rug. Russ gives these people too much credit seeing how they're already extremely stupid by association.

If I had a large chunk of land I'd build a 1/4 track for these kids to run on for nothing 24/7. Make my profits off a fully stocked snack bar and have everyone sign a waiver for legal purposes.

A husband/wife team do this in So-cal after their son got killed. Great idea if you ask me.

honestly thats not true. the majority of the wanna be street racers are high school kids that dont know how to drive. The ppl I know that are hardcore street racers setup private runs so that there are less ppl to spectate. street racing wasnt big before it got big after that stupid movie came out.

I gotta call BS on that one. As a retired street racer (1995 to 2000) I can say that I saw Friday and Saturday nights down in Fremont, San Jose and Milpitas with 200+ cars no problem. And that was after the pack got split up, so we'd have a couple hundred cars at one location and who knows how many cars at a few other locations because they got splintered from the main pack.

The Fast and the Furious came out in 2001, but the pack was already WAY thick and chock full of morons by the time I left. Seeing several non-injury accidents and then one really nasty accident with a few serious injuries was what sent me packing. I never looked back.

Back to my point though, I can personally attest to street racing being plenty big as far back as 1995.

OMG. I just realized 1995 was ten years ago. Holy poop, I'm old.

I agree. I went to a few Fremont and Ringwood 'events' long before FF came out.
