Dan, she's probably not using it because it's longer than the other one when she walks. It's probably weirder for her to try to gimp around on it than to just be a tripod for a while. When the cast comes off, I imagine she'll go back to normal.

I think she is just being a wimp. Maddie used her leg even when it was bandaged like that the day she came home from her surgery. That is actually just a bandage on her leg to keep her from chewing on it, she probably looks a little like this under it:

Emma is not as tough as Maddie, but she needs to start using the leg - it is part of the recovery.

Gotcha. I thought it was a hard cast. Did the vet have any suggestions to get her to use it some more?

Nope, we were told to keep her still but encourage her to use the leg - WTF?

Hopefully after a few days she will get used to it and start to use it. She will put it down when she is standing still but al other times, it is up off of the ground...

That is the plan, she could be back to normal activity as soon as 8 weeks - as long as the x-rays show that the bone has healed...

That is one of Maddie's post op xrays, you can see where the bone was cut, rotated and bolted back in place. Once that heals she can return to active duty...

Here's a good shot of all the hardware in her leg:

If you think that's gross, don't Google "Bullet wounds" & click images.

This presented a different problem, we had to put a bag over her bandage each time she went out and had to help stabilize her because she fell over a few times because she was afraid to use her leg.

So far, she has yet to put pressure on the leg that was worked on which is a little concerning to me. The older dog that had the same surgery done a few years ago used her legs right away.

Doesn't she look sad?
Are both of your dogs from the same breeder? Is this a common injury for Labs? That seems so crazy, that Emma can brake a leg by running into another dog.

Nope, Maddie's was a birth defect in the way her legs developed. We did a lot of research when we picked the breeder Emma came from, she is AKC papered and has several grand champion huynting dogs in her blood line - including her father who has been a cover dog for several hunting magazies including Ducks Unlimited. Of course all of this came at a premium when it came to the cost of the puppy but we thought it would be worth it in the long run to not have the same leg/joint issues Maddie had.

Emma's was an accute injury that could have happened to any dog, we think she took a hit to the side of her leg when she was up on her back legs only. We did not see the collision happen, but we heard it, but based on the way the two dogs would play and the type of injury, we think this is what happened...
