Owner of the house we rent has decided to sell the house. I'm going to be moving to San jose Jan '09. My mom is debating moving up there now because she has more options/contacts for work up there but I still have classes to finish down here, meaning I'd need to find some place to rent for just a few months

whoever buys the house also inherents the lease that the original owner signs, and is bound by the terms, likewise you are too.
the only way the lease is broken is if the house is foreclosed upon, then the bank will kick you to the curb.
btw, im going through the same thing right now.
