Subnets are like hot chicks inside of badass cars from the 80's that are equiped with car phones. If Hot chick "A" has something to say to hot chick "B" she knows that she can speak directly to her without needing to use the phone. However, if hotchick "A" want's to talk to a hotchick inside of another car she uses the phone to route her disscussion. The hotchicks within the car have the same network portion of their address (the masked part matches). The phone is the gateway/router.
Subnet masks make a whole lot more sense if you teach people to think in binary. Then the more efficient /xx subnets make more sense.
I deal with people on the phone all the time that barely know what an IP address is. I have to get them up to speed pretty quick (I leave out the binary for this) so they can get there laptops talking to one of our devices.
