IT to me is getting systems running. Its combining hardware and integrating software together to make a workable system for a business.

Developing software is different because you're creating a specific piece of software to serve a specific function. And writing it well is very difficult. There is a big difference between writing something that'll simply work, and developing software that'll be reusable, extensible and easily modifiable.

So yeah, they cross over frequently, but they are different skillsets.

Also, I hate dealing with hardware and setup issues, which is why I call the IT guys all the time. Fix my compooter. I too stupid to fix. Actually, sw engineer support probably has to be worse than regular desk support, because we usually know just enough to get ourselves into more trouble
I guess I lump most any technical job with computers as "IT". I definitely understand what you mean about the different skill sets though. I've done a lot of "programming" (don't look at me like that, it was object oriented) but nothing like what you guys do. I enjoy it, but I don't think I could deal with the hours.
