Well it lasted a couple months!
3rd gear checked out today...
Ironically it happened right near DBTuned so I coasted to a stop by the shop...
Paul's words about my transmission came true.. And like some sort of broken Subaru vortex, it happened as I passed his shop..
Good seeing you guys today!!
Luckily I operate on the "Oh look honey It BROKE! Now I HAVE to fix / upgrade it", method of getting parts by the wife.. Thanks to the catastrophic failure I'm going to try to swing a PPG Dogbox..
Wish me luck!!

Yup.. I knew it was going to happen..
I had the car towed back to my house in Elk Grove.. Id love to send the work Paul's way, but I usually build my own trannies.. Something about playing with a good trannie.. Really gets me goin... Uh..
Well the ppg dog box is only another grand or so in parts over the synchro'd straight cut gearset as far as I can tell.. Which once you're spending 4 or 5 grand in parts, whats another 1k?
The only decision I have to make is how big of a bite outta my Ducati budget to I want to take for this trans...
That in mind, Ill probably only go one of two ways.. Either cheap out completely and just do an MFactory semi-helical gearset, or just go for it and get a PPG dogbox..

I don't really want a 6 speed.. The car makes enough power that lap times would probably drop rowing a 6 speed rather than just letting the torque do the work.. The 68HTA has a huge area under the curve.. If I had a larger turbo that falls off under 5 grand Id consider a 6 speed, but the little 68hta is hard in the boost way down in the 3k rpm range and holds up well to redline..
Edit - lap times would go UP with a 6 speed. Long day....

Well said. I love my STi, and I love the 6MT, but if Subaru built a syncro'd 5MT (yeah, I'm a wuss) that had the same strength, I'd prefer it, no question.

We'll see what the case looks like when I pull it apart.. Might have to take you up on that if it's bad.. hah..
Quaife Helical front LSD ordered....
MMmmmmm

Now if I can only make up my mind on the trans......
1: Mfactory 1-4 Semi-Helical, syncro, forged gearset ~ 2300
2: PPG 1-4 Straight cut dogset w/ shift interlocker ~6000
Option 1 = Lots of budget left for ducati purcase / build.
Option 2 = Barely squeeze a 916-996 and have to ride it stock for a while....
*Edit - and with the baby coming in August, might have to ride it stock for just about ever if I go option two....
Plus to actually race the scoob I'd need wheels, tires, and brakes.. Probably a radiator... So thousands more in prep parts.... I could race the duc as is in the AFM next season... ARG.
