Contrary to popular belief, most absinthe is legal in the US (the 70% kinds, I think). And I personally know many people who have brought back said beverage from Europe (myself included).
When you return, just declare that you're bringing back some alcoholic beverage bottles (unopened!)...I think the limit's 2/person. Chances are they won't even check you (especially if you're a citizen). If you are worried about them potentially giving you **** about it, you can always run the risk of not declaring it. But then you are indeed ****ed if they do end up searching you for whatever reason.
But like I said, if you're a citizen and you just declare it as just a bottle of alcohol, it'll be smooth sailing.
That being said, when you're over there, do try some of the hardcore absinthe...I haven't personally had Russian absinthe in my life, but some of the Czech versions are quite powerful, to say the least.

Also, you do realize Italy's not really a neighbor of Russia...there's quite a few countries in between, which are also worth a gander. That being said, if you're in Italy you must try the liquor called 'Fire of Etna'...it really is like drinking fire! oh yeah...
