and that's a question in itself, how does a state like california vote primarily democrat for president, but in favor of a very conservative proposition like 8?

From what I've heard, its due to a lot of minorities. They tend to be more for equality on racial issues, but immigrants (naturalized ones that can vote, obviously) tend to vote more religiously conservative.

There were probably a lot of people that voted for Obama and for 8.
