true. i dropped $1500 for christmas one year on ear rings for teh wifey, but this was after we were married. i took her to some nice places before we got engaged.

however, valentines day is not really a reason to go all out, esepcially with someone who you're not in a serious committed relationship with. nice flowers at work, nice dinner, small gift and a card are pretty much something that cannot go wrong. flowers at home before or after work = no-no. flowers delivered at work when all her co-workers are around = correct way to do it.
