if, if, if, but the problem is that all that stuff is true. As gas has been going up in price, so has cost of all other goods. Additional taxes on gasoline right now isn't going to help that situation, especially as long as the infrastructure for public trans doesn't exist in most places.

Vendor forums, the thread by RaceComp. I linked to it a week or so ago. They sell a number of very comprehensive, very good packages for GCs. Great prices on quality components. I'm rockin' a set of RCE coilovers on my 93 now. Or at least, will be once my rear diff issues are sorted out.
Thanks.

try taking public transit in a city where the planning agency doesnt have its own head in its ***. to get to NYC from my aunts house its a 10 minute drive, 20 minute ferry, then a 15-20 minute walk to anywhere in lower Manhattan or a quick hop on the subway to anywhere else.
compared to driving that saves about an hour and a half. your correct that our system here is slow as ****, but thats because our area limitless space to expand so we waste land and gas has always been cheap.
expensive gas will change peoples habbits and desires. which will change the people they vote for. which will change our ****forbrains city planners. it will force business to become more efficient.
eventually.
the only reason the gas tax is stupid is because we subsidize the oil industry in CA. something like 80% of the revenue from the gas tax here in CA ends up right back at chevron exxon and shell because the state pays them just to be here in the form of tax breaks and subsidies.
**** that.
who cares if oil production moves to another state and user based taxes go up. maybe those billions of dollars we'll save can be spent teaching english to the 60% of the state that cant speak it.
userbased fees are better than regular taxes. why should i be punished for saving money and carpooling as much as the jackass with 2 hummers and a home eq loan?

what we need in a city like Sac that currently has no good transit system is street cars or diesel light rail. the trains themselves are only a small percentage of the cost when it comes to rail; it's the tracks, the catenary wires, the power stations, the stations, etc... and all the political BS that comes with it, every faction and interest group has to have their say on what "their people" need and all that does is jack up the price.

my commute is 2 minuets so this does not affect me. I wish I could move farther away from work but use public transit to commute

im saying: bring on $5 a gallon. people will be much more motivated to make economic/political/social changes when they are taking their kids to school on bike handlebars.
