Yeah, that's the idea...

See, when you are making an *** of yourself, and the police ask you nicely to stop doing whatever it is you are doing, and you fail to comply... whatever happens next is your own fault. It's not like that dude that died was sitting around meditating when he got tazed. He was resisting arrest and/or failing to comply with a lawful order from a LEO. I don't see why it's so wrong for the officer to use the simplest means at his disposal for subduing and apprehending the young man. It's a terrible tragedy that it killed him, but cops aren't all evil because of it.

If I may share a personal experience? About six years ago, I got busted for public intoxication. To make a long story short, I was also suspected of vandalism and theft. I fled on foot away from the scene of the alleged crimes and the accuser and tried in vain to hide in the second story level of a two-story retail shopping center.

When the police showed up in two squad cars, with lights flashing, spotlights blazing, and three guns drawn on me, even in my drunken stupor I knew damn well to do exactly what the officers said. I replied "Yes, sir" or "No, sir", didn't give them any crap, and considering the situation I *think* I acted as considerate and politely as possible. In return, I didn't get tazered, I didn't get roughed-up, and I can't recall even getting yelled at. My advice is, when the police show up, quit ****in' around and do as they say, 'cause fun and games are over.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I'm not sayign the officers were threatened by him... I'm saying that if you wanna be a punk and **** with police officers, it's your fault when you get tazed/clubbed/tackled/etc. in the process of being arrested. The officers aren't being big bad ogres who are thrill-killing, they were doing their job- arresting a lawbreaker. If nancy-boy hadn't felt the need to ignore the law of hs municipality, he'd still be thumping that bible today.

Mr. Furley, did you read the report? You are intitled to your opinion, I'm just wondeing what it is your mad at. Do you hate the police for the fact that they are police?

ERSEYVILLE, Illinois (AP) -- A teenager carrying a Bible and shouting "I want Jesus" was shot twice with a police stun gun and later died at a St. Louis hospital, authorities said.

In a statement obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, police in Jerseyville, about 40 miles north of St. Louis, said 17-year-old Roger Holyfield would not acknowledge officers who approached him and he continued yelling, "I want Jesus."

Police tried to calm the teen, but Holyfield became combative, according to the statement. Officers fired the stun gun at him after he ignored their warnings, then fired again when he continued struggling, police said.

Holyfield was flown to St. Louis' Cardinal Glennon Hospital after the confrontation Saturday; he died there Sunday, police said.

An autopsy was planned for Tuesday.

The statement expressed sympathy to Holyfield's family but said city and police officials would not discuss the matter further.

Calls Tuesday to Jerseyville Police Chief Brad Blackorby were not immediately returned. The department has been using stun guns for about five months, according to the statement.

In a report released in March, international human rights group Amnesty International said it had logged at least 156 deaths across the country in the previous five years related to police stun guns.

The rise in deaths accompanies a marked increase in the number of U.S. law enforcement agencies employing devices made by Taser International Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona. About 1,000 of the nation's 18,000 police agencies used Tasers in 2001; more than 7,000 departments had them last year, according to a government study.

Police had used Tasers more than 70,000 times as of last year, Congress' Government Accountability Office said.

Amnesty International has urged police departments to suspend the use of Tasers pending more study. Taser International said the group's count was flawed and falsely linked deaths to Taser use when there has been no such official conclusion.
some math:

156 deaths per 70,000 taser discharges = 1 death per 448 times a taser is used.

ide like to point a few things out here:

a night stick/baton to the head is considered deadly force and is prohibited by most departments.

as you know tazers are in the "less than lethal catagory." obviously they can kill, but the situations in which that happens are fairly special.

so lets see, what would i do in the situation. i arrive on scene with a young suspect acting 5150 and i dont know if he is armed or not or on drugs. as i try to calm him down he becomes aggresive and obviously im going to fear for the worse. again, not knowing if he is armed or not im going to be very cautious, if hes on drugs my OC spray will most likely have no effect, so worrying about getting hurt myself and doing serious damage to the suspect, i would chose the elecrtonic device. after one ride hes still not cooperating, so i activate it again and give him another ride. now i have a suspect under control, and no injured officers or public, and no worries about a police brutality suit.

its unfortunate that he died. but the other alternative in the situation was to attack him and risk injurying him and the officers, or shooting him. he had a chance at life with the tazer, but its a shame it didnt happen.

bottom line is: he should have cooperated and it never woulda happened.

Im mad at the fact that they tazed an unthreatening person TWO ****ING TIMES.... obviously once is enough for ANYONE so WHY TWICE???

And you people swallow the cops word like its ****in gospel or something, HOW THE **** COULD A LITTLE KID WITH A BIBLE BE CONSIDERED COMBATIVE???!?@?#?@$@

if some 17yr old kid came up to me yelling crazy **** with a bible in his hand i wouldnt feel the least bit like my life was in danger, would you??? and if i did i would knock his teeth out or dip him on the ground, not try to electrocute him. Im pissed because cops get away with murdering just because they have a badge but if i just HIT someone they would try to lock me up for years.
