We have a book of commonly used acronyms here at work.

I think there are currently 900+ entries.

I truly believe people use them to make themselves sound cool while simultaneously making the person ignorant of the meaning look stupid.

Try being in the military some time. You can't go 3 sentences without using/hearing an acronym.

But, much like being immersed in a foreign language, you start to pick it up unconsciously.
