Tell me about... a new windshield
I think I remember hearing or reading something about suby windshields being weak and cracking a lot. A bunch of bs I thought until today, when I noticed that I now have a crack that apparently came from? So now I need a new windshield. Any recommendations on where to go or call? About how much am I looking at for a new piece of glass?

Yeah, my dad gets his replaced yearly (hazard of driving in orchards) and rates don't go up. Can't do it more then once a year, though, and expect rates not to go up.
Usually its in their best interest, because a broken windshield can lead to less visibility and can cause the driver (and the insurance co.) with the cracked windshield be held responsible in an accident. At the very least, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Yeah, the secret phrase is "my windshield is broken, I need it replaced"
But, if that didn't work, then you probably need a new insurance company or just deal with the cost out of pocket.

My insurance company (which shall remain unnamed for other reasons
) is one of those that will not pay for a replacement windshield nor glass repair for a rock chip.
I paid out of pocket a few years ago for a PPG windshield to replace a crack that developed after being chipped by a stone, thinking that a quality product might be more chip resistant. That doesn't seem to be the case, unfortunately. I picked up yet another tiny rock chip from a relatively small stone (larger than a pea but smaller than a dime), thrown off a compact car many, many yards ahead of me on the freeway. I paid a guy to repair the chip for $30 and it is holding just fine.
If your insurance won't replace your windshield at their cost, I'm not sure if it's worth paying out of the pocket for big name glass, as long as it's a reputable company that you deal with.
