graphics card sucks.
wireless kb and mouse suck.
otherwise seems like an ok machine. I definitely agree that you could build it for much much much less, but if you're not into that, and need a warranty/return policy, then costco ain't a bad place. IIRC, they will take back computers SIX MONTHS after you buy them, no questions asked. Crazy return policy.
if you need help/advice building a machine, let me know. www.newegg.com is one of the best places to buy components. Last week I ordered a system at 11:54am, had the fedex at my house the next day at noon. Great service.

Man I was bored. hahaha
If you have $1100 to spend, you can get a cutting edge video card (an ATI AIW 9800XT or one of the newer ones, makes your computer a TiVO/entertainmentcenter). Or get the above setup and a 21" LCD.
And I guarantee that all the above components are higher quality than anything Dell uses.
Good luck.

I will back up mexicanpizza on this one all the way.
If you need any help assembling a system, drive on down to San Jose and I will build your system for you if you order the above parts. =)
Or if you go to the Mt. Hammy meet I can do it there even.
hehe.

i find there are 2 types of computer users:
one that can build their own
one that can pay for a new one with support and a lot of handholding.
ditto with cars and other neato things in life...
if the starter of this thread dont want to spend time learning how to make your own PC, by all means, buy one ready to go. me, i can assemble one but i got a killer deal and warranty that i dont have to dick around.
in the end, who gives a flying F if the dang thing does what you want.

miranda, talk to dell and get a 3 year warranty plan for that laptop. trust me on that...
sure it may tag on an extra $230 or so, but when that LCD backlight goes out or the on-board XXXXX goes out on the motherboard, good luck...
at my work, people get $2500-3000 laptops and they treat it like a red-headed stepchild.
i call dell if something breaks and usually next day the replacement part is there...

I got a dell inspiron for free, it was a POS. Then it got stolen. =x
Seriously though, if you buy a dell laptop, be very careful with it, the shell is extremely weak and cracks easy.
If you want a high quality laptop, get an IBM. I have an IBM Thinkpad 600e (PII-400MHz/288MB RAM/10GB HD) and the thing isrock solid, I have dropped it and the only thing that happened was it scratched. This laptop was made in 1998 and it has not problems other then a couple of random dead pixels ( this is really good concidering LCDs have an expected lifespan of around 5 years ).
If price is an issue on a laptop, IBM sells refurbished laptops on ebay and on their website for around $800 for a newerish laptop.

I agree, just build it yourself. I think having someone build it for you is a huge ripoff. A computer is one of the easiest things to build. Everytime I see one of those little signs at a Best Buy or something that say 'Let Us Install it', I shake my head. I can't believe what they charge to just install a sound card, for example. It's criminal! Just do it yourself. Good learning experience.
