There are many variables unknown in your situation like price and what not but I would suggest you research into a PocketPC based phone since you mentioned the TREO. They run a mobile version of windows. Hp makes some models with built in Camera, Wifi internet (80211.b), Bluetooth (read: Bluetooth GPS navigation, I love mine) plus all the other features of PDA. In addition you could use your SD cards to carry music with you and play it using the incorporated windows media player.

As far as hooking up the laptop to the phone to use internet at this time it isn't much better than 56k performance. Phones with GPRS should offer a little better performance. A phone with bluetooth should also alow you to use the internet feature on the phone connected to your laptop without wires which is nice.

www.mobileburn.com is a good resource for reviews and www.expansys.com is a good one to find phones not available in the US.

If you want more phone and less PDA I enjoy my Sony Ericson. It has intuitive features and it has Bluetooth (read: wireless headset, hella cool).

Let me know if you want more advise/info.
Thanks for the info.
hmm.. what phones have pocket pc in them?

One should note that the phone Aaron mentioned is considered a "smart phone" and is different from a PDA phone. While it does have a windows CE operating system it should be considered more phone than PDA (basically it is smaller and more phone like but has "pdalike" features). There are a few companies that make PocketPC phones (HP being a newer one, Audiovox and I-mate to name a few) check out http://www.expansys-usa.com to find more. I have a general dislike for motorolla products (however their smartphones look promising to me) due to their non-ingenious features such as an audible dead battery alarm when the phone is set to silent, no profile based sound settings, poor volume on both the phone and ear bud (this was the V66 I had for a week but I haven't liked some of their other products). I like nokia and sony ericson products if you need a phone only.

Below is an example of HP's h6315 pocketpc GSM based phone. It is "larger" but can be used to play movies (if you re-encode them), music, sync with outlook or used to run GPS navigation (for which you would want a large screen). It also has built in Wifi so you could use it to surf at hi-speed wireless access points (starbucks and airports or the likes).

Can I have the T616? I am still using the T68i (it's predecessor). I have wanted the T61X for a while now. The 6200 is a good phone too and has speakerphone!

Correct on the smartphone vs PocketPC.

The smartphones can do a lot of the same stuff, but obviously the displays are a lot smaller, etc.

Note that, at least on the Motorola side, all of the new phones use mini-SD.

Ken, what other smartphones have you run across that work well? I don't follow a lot of the international stuff.

I have been looking at this product for a bit because I think it is cheaper than others and seems to do a lot of the same stuff.

Well, Aaron there are two types of "Smartphones" I have seen, those that run Microsoft OS and those that run the Symbian OS.

Sony Ericson makes the P900 and P910 which run the Symbian OS but people like them a lot!
The Samsung phones look pretty nice with MS OS.

Then there is a european phone manufacturer I-mate that makes the SP3i that looks real nice.

The Nokia 6200 has MUCH better reception. I would ask for that one but my girlfriend has one she just retired!

The Ericson has poor RF reception in those early phones (the t616 being slightly better than my T68i).
